FATHER A SLAVE,
LIVED TO BE 100
Old age may slow some people
down, but for Lula Jones, 82, of
Route 2, Blackshear, it hasn’t
seemed to put a damper on her
way of life too much.
The Negro woman was born
and raised in Pierce County, and
lives on a farm approximately
two miles west of Blackshear.
Her sister, Hannah Bright, age 92,
lives down the road from her with
in “hollering distance.”
Living alone, both women still
do their housework and other
chores, and Hannah still does her
own yard work. Having no trans
portation, they walk to and from
town for groceries and other ne
cessities, unless someone stops
and offers them a ride.
When asked how often she
walked to town, Lula replied,
“Once or sometimes twice a week,
whenever I want something differ
ent to eat. Some people are too
stingy to eat anything they want,
but I put food ahead of any
thing else.”
Responding to amazement at
her walking that distance at her
age, she said that last month she
walked to Waycross. She was sup
posed to ride with a white man
who worked there, but something
happened that she got left, so
she walked to Waycross.
The spry old lady, being in
good health all her life, has been
to the doctor only twice in her
life — once because of a fall, and
the other time when she cut her
finger. She has never had a pres
cription filled. Although her eye
sight is not too good, she can eat
anything she desires. The only
present ailment she knows about
is that her feet hurt from “try
ing to take off corns.”
Lula and Hannah are the only
living survivors of a family of 12
children, born to Tyro Lowe
Stockton and James Stockton, who
were both slaves. Their mother
was raised in Liberty County,
and their father was raised in
Camden County. Lula said she
can recall when they were small
children and their father used to
tell them stories of the days when
they were slaves. She said it is
believed that her father was 100
years old or older when he died.
For years, Lula washed clothes
for people in town and wnuld walk
to and from town to pick up and
deliver them. In later years,
when her husband passed away,
she bought a mule and would pick
up and deliver the clothes in a
wagon.
Lula was married to Charlie
Jones, who died in October. 1944.
She has one 'son who lives in Los'
Angeles, Calif., and has raised
one granddaughter.
Hannah is the widow of Noah
Bright and has only one living
child.
Lula attributes her good health
and long life to “good hard work,
and obeying the word of God.”
