NITROGEN FOR PECANS
Three-fourths of the pecan tree’s
nitrogen supply should have been
applied before new growth began
this spring. This insures proper
twig growth, according to R. L.
Livingston, head of the Extension
Service horticulture department.
The remainder of the nitrogen
may be applied in June. This will
insure good leaf retention which
in turn aids in producing quality
nuts.

BITTING DOGS
Never kill the dog that bites
you, advises Dr. Charles N. Dob
bins, head of the Extension Ser
vice veterinary science depart
ment. See that the animal is
brought to the Humane Society
shelter for confinement and ob
servation. Depending on the out
come of the observation and a
laboratory test of its brain for
rabies, your physician or Health
Department will advise whether
you should undergo anti-rabies
vaccine treatment.

CONSUMERS
Q. How can it be said thuthfully
food is a bargain?
A. Americans pay less than 19
cents of each dollar of their in
come after taxes for food. If you
lived in England, you’d pay 29
cents; in France, 31 cents; in
Japan, 47 cents, and in Russia, 53
cents. Our food cost in relation
to income is the lowest in the
world.
Q. When food is so plentiful,
why does it cost so much?
A. Somebody is doing a lot of
your food preparation and cook
ing for you for one reason. About
44 percent of all fruit juices are
sold in frozen concentrate, 35 per
cent of all potatoes have been
processed, cakes are in mix form
and whole meals have been as
sembled, cooked and frozen. Be
fore World War 11, the housewife
spent 23 cents of every dollar for
food. At present-day prices, she
could buy the “old-style” food for
about 14 cents. We’re paying for
service, transportation and pro
cessing. Food is no longer avail
able just “in season.”
Q. Isn't the price of meat out
of proportion in relation to other
food prices?
A. Meat quality has improved
in the past 40 years. There is
more tender, grain-fed beef suit
able for grilling and roasting and
more lean "meat-type” pork. The
change in price of meat in this
same four decades jumped from
30 cents to 65 cents a pound. But
Income per person in this period
nearly quadrupled from SSOB af
ter taxes to $1,969. The pinch is
felt by those whose incomes don’t
fit the average.

There’s Excitement
in the Seasons
and comfort in the home
with electric coding and heating
[n any season, even between-season seasons, the
happiest homes are those blessed with electric
cooling and heating.
Feel the first scorching blast of summer? Cool it.
A touch on the control of your electric cooling
system tames the temperature.
Feel a bite of blackberry winter? Muzzle it with
a nudge at the thermostat. Swiftly, silently, chill
is gone. Clean-gone, since no flame means no dust,
no smoke, no grime.
But happiest of all are homes equipped with a
flameless electric heat pump. Here’s cooling or
heating, as needed. Automatically. Simply set your
thermostat once to maintain your ideal year-round
climate. You never have to think about it again.
And that’s something to think about.

WHAT'S UNSATURATED?
Chemists say a fat is unsaturat
ed if it can combine with more
hydrogen. It is described as satur
ated if it cannot. Mrs. Rita Wat
ers, Extension Service home eco
nomist-nutrition, says unsaturated
fats generally are liquid at room
temperature. Most saturated fats,
on the other hand, are solid at
room temperature.
