PIGS FOR RESEARCH
The U. S. Department of Ag
griculture’s research station at
BeltsvDle, Md., has developed
miniature pigs that will be used
for research into human ailments.
It seems that hogs are a lot like
people. They have about the same
food requirements, digest food in
much the same way, and even
have ulchers. The small, minia
ture pigs require smaller doses of
costly experimental drugs, are
less expensive to house, and are

HOGS ON PASTURE
Pasture is a clean, sanitary
way to feed hogs, says Dr. W. G.
Luce, Extension Service animal
scientist. But he adds that it
can be expensive. Pasture is us
ually beneficial for breeding stock,
but it may not be economically
possible for growing-finishing op
erations. Dr. Luce points out
that hogs can’t utilize much past
ure. Only an acre is needed for
20 to 25 head.

DRUGS, DRIVING
CAN BE FATAL
Drugs and driving can make
a fatal mix.
The rule that those who drink
shouldn’t drive is equally sound
advice for many persons who take
medicinal drugs.
Some medications, even those
purchased without prescription,
can dull your senses and impair
your driving ability.
Consult your physician or drug
gist about the side effects of the
medicinal drugs you are taking,
before you get behind the wheel.
It could spell the difference be
tween your life or death.

Some Things Some People Don't
Know About a Weekly Newspaper
1. A weekly newspaper must get 85 percent of its
expenses from advertising.
2. Space is the newspaper’s stock in trade. The
paper sells space, like the store sells goods, to pay
expenses.
3. Only about 15 percent of a paper’s expenses is
received from subscriptions.
4. The paper must first have subscribers in order
to be able to sell space for advertising.
5. The cost of publishing a weekly newspaper has
increased about four-fold in the last 25 years.
6. The increased cost is caused mainly by the great
increase in costs for labor and machinery.
7. A newspaper does not charge for publishing
news articles, that is, items that are non-commercial
and not personal messages, memorials or resolutions.
8. A newspaper can publish only a limited amount
of news in each issue.
9. A newspaper must cut down many articles of
news to fit the space available and the time to set
type.
10. A newspaper editor reserves the right to edit
all news articles, that is, to shorten, to correct or to
improve.
