This has been made poss ible through the use of re cently developed equipment which is now available in Waycross, W. B. He pointed out that the availability of the call-trac ing equipment and other fac tors still do not permit South ern Bell at this time to meet every request to trace a call. However, he said the equip ment will be used more and more in the future as the telephone company and law enforcement officials step up action against nuisance and obscene calls. “Southern Bell has long been concerned about the problems of nuisance and obscene calls,” said Smith, “and we want to do every thing we can to help bring this type of call to a halt.” The call-tracing equipment was used recently in Char lotte, N. C., in connection with the arrest of a man charged with making obscene calls and sentenced to two years in prison. The method of call tracing now being used by Southern Bell does not involve any wiretapping or listening in on conversations, Mr. Smith pointed out. He said the equipment records the num ber from which the nuisance and obscene calls are placed and that the police then take the steps toward arrest and conviction. Georgia law provided a penalty of not less than one year in jail for each convic tion of making obscene calls. Southern Bell suggests that anyone who receives a nuis ance or obscene call hang up immediately. This often dis courages the caller, Smith said. If the calls continue, then the victim should call the telephone company busi ness office. If the call is ser ious, such as a threat to life or property, then the victim should also call the police.
