Warning Given
On Two Hazards
Os Yule Season
ATLANTA, GA. — Georgia
parents should safeguard their
children against two hazards
of the holiday season — illegal
fireworks and unsafe Christ
mas decorations, Comptroller
General James L. Bentley
warned today.
“This should be a season
of good cheer, not one of tra
gedy,” Bentley said.
Bentley, state fire safety
commissioner since 1963, said
parents should be extremely
diligent in keeping hazardous
fireworks away from children.
The illegal sale of fireworks
has been greatly reduced in
Georgia since passage of a
1962 law, Bentley said, but
fireworks seem to appear more
frequently during the holi
days than at any other time
of year.
“Perhaps the greatest pro
blem in this area is that peo
ple buy fireworks from out
of-state and then transport
them across the state line to
their relatives and friends. The
use of these fireworks is il
legal, even if they are not pur
chased in Georgia. They can
be fatally dangerous to small
children, “Bentley said.
Bentley noted that under the
1962 law it is a violation of
the law to possess, transport
or use fireworks. The law also
provides that every sheriff,
policeman, or other local offi
cer has responsibility to en
force the law against fire
works.
Christmas trees and Christ
mas decorations often pose
other fire hazards during the
holidays, Bentley said, urging
Georgians to be cautious in
setting up Christmas decora
tions.

“People should be particu
larly careful to keep their
Christmas trees from drying
out completely, thus becom
ing a serious fire hazard. The
safest method is to keep the
tree in a tub of water or keep
some water at the base of the
tree. “Bentley said.
Faulty electrical wiring of
ten poses another serious ha
zard in Christmas decorations
which have not been used
since the previous Christmas,
he continued. “All wiring con
nections, lights, or sockets
should be checked carefully,”
he said.
Bentley pointed out that
throughout the country last
Christmas, some 61 persons
lost their lives in fires, accord
ing to the National Safety
Council. These deaths took
place during the three-day
Christmas holiday beginning
at 6:00 P. M. on Christmas

Eve, he said.
“I hope all Georgians will
cooperate in making this a
safe Christmas for everyone.
Bentley said.
TAXES AND RECORDS
This is a good time of year
to take a reading on records
to anticipate taxable income
for the year. It could be that
some thought between now
and the end of the year could
result in income tax savings.
University of Georgia Coop
erative Extension Serivec ec
onomists point out that com
plete and accurate records are
basic to sound ax management
in any business — and the
farm business is no exception.
Now is the time to decide what
fruit plants you would like to
purchase for transplanting this
winter, suggest Extension Service
horticulturists at the University of
Georgia.
