again be on tree planting and
anti-litter drives.
Started as “Make Georgia
Beautiful Week” in 1965, the
program became a month-long
observance this year and will
be continued as such in 1967.
In addition, according to
Thomas G. Williams, Jr., head
of the Cooperative Extension
Service landscape department,
it has been expanded to in
clude many plants other than
dogwood. Redbud, crape myr
tle, magnolia, and pine are al
so being promoted for the up
coming beautification effort.
The Georgia Forestry Com
mission cooperates in the pro
gram by producing thousands
of seedlings for use during the
planting season. County agents
have assisted beautification
committees and other groups
in ordering these trees for de
livery, distribution, and trans
planting next month. Another
cooperating sponsor, the Geor
gia State Nurserymen’s Asso
ciation, is expected to make
landscape plants available at
special prices.
Six other state agencies and
organizations have joined the
University of Georgia Exten
sion Service and the State
Department of Industry and
Trade in supporting the Janu
ary beautification program.
They include the State High
way Department, Associated
Industries of Georgia, Geor
gia Petroleum Council, Garden
of Georgia. Inc., Georgia Fed
eration of Women’s Club, and
State Department of Educa
tion
Mr. Williams said special ef
forts are now underway
throughout the state to organ
ize a beautification committee
in every county. He added that
65 counties formed such groups
during the program this year,
and that well planned and last

Mr. Williams continued that
the county Extension office,
headquarters of the county
agent and Extension home
economist, is serving as the
local information center for
“Make Georgia Beautiful
Month.” He said these local
representatives of the Univer
sity of Georgia have already
called organizational and plan
ning meetings in most coun
ties.
In most cases the county
beautification committee is
composed of city and county
officials, representatives o f
business and industry, leaders
in education and religion, civic
and garden club officers, and
delegates from youth organiza
tions.
“A city or community must
first recognized the need for
improvements then make ne
cessary plans for develop

He believes the “Make Geor
gia Beautiful” program, spear
headed by the county beauti
fication committee, provides
excellent framework for get
ting the beautification job
done.
County Extension offices
have been supplied with in
formational kits and other
material that will enable
couny agents and Extension
home economists to assist in
organizing beautification com
mittees. They have a list of
suggested projects and activi
ties appropriate for individual
and group participation. Sub
ject-matter information is also
available on planning, develop

improvement projects.
