NEW SHRUB CARE
You must practice care with
your recently purchased
shrubs, accordnig to Extension
Horticulturist Gerald E. Smith.
In transporting balled and bur
lapped plants, the shrubs
should be carried with the
hands underneath the ball of

by their stems because this
is likely to break away the

CHRISTMAS GIVING I
“He has filled the hungry with j
good things, and the rich he has .
sent empty away,” Luke 1:53.
When Jesus came into the
world, it was generally consider- '
ed that the only life worth living '
was the life of a rich man. The '
lot of all the rest of the people ■
was to labor that the rich might
become richer and more power- ;
ful. Government was the play
thing of the rich. They used it not
to serve the people but that the
people might serve the rulers. ,
Wars were the recreation of the ,
rich.
When the angel appeared to
Mary and told her that she would
mother the Son of God, she real
ized not only that the Lord had
dealt with her in a marvelous
way, but also that through her,
He was upsetting the values of !
the world in which she lived. And 1
so in that portion of Luke, chap
ter one, verses 46 to 55, known as
the Magnificat, Mary witnesses
that the humble poor had been '
recognized by God, that their
needs were being fulfilled, and
that the powerful rich were being '
spurned by God in the fulfillment ।
of his ways among men. The Son <
of God was to be a poor man 1
in the things of this world. '
Christmas is indeed a time of i
great joy —a time,to be thank- '
ful for being alive. But it is also 1
a time to remember that the One
in whose honor we celebrate ,
Christmas was a poor man and
that while he does not command
his followers to live a life of pov- :
erty, He does insist that they :
be conscious of the needs of peo
ple about them. The Christmas
that is centered only upon family
fellowship and gift exchanging is
an empty Christmas indeed. There
are sick people, homeless people,
lost people all about us. To wor
ship Christ at Christmas is to do
something for the needy, just as
He came to fill the hungry with
good things, to give some gifts
that we know will not be answer
ed by a gift in return.
To waste money on extravagant
gifts mocks Jesus. The practice
of giving liquor at Christmas is a
pagan practice.
Why did Mary say, “The rich
he hath sent away?” The rich
were not living up to their re
sponsibilities. They were not good
stewards of their wealth. They
had become conceited in their
own ways and di'd hot feel that
they needed God. Today, many
rich Americans, which includes a
large segment of those who think
of themselves as “pore”, are be
ing sent away empty because
their Christmases are empty of
concern and love for others. They
spend too much money and time
on little things and extravagances.
There is a world in need. Jesus
can satisfy that need. But people
must be released from the spell
of material riches before they can
be real disciples.

Polyethelene
Bags Used to
Ship Seedlings
Macon — Georgia land
owners are receiving their
Georgia Forestry Commission
grown seedlings in Kraft poly
ethelene bags this year.
Ray Shirley, Commission di
rector, Macon, said that a three
year test on the bags proved
them equal to other type pack
ages. Over a half million seed
lings were used in the test,
Shirley added.
Sanford Darby, Commission
Reforestation chief, pointed out
that the K-P bag is lighter and
the seedlings require no water
ing if the bag is not torn. He
emphasize that the moss, seal
ed in the bag, provides 100
percent humidity. A bundle of
2,000 trees weights 40 pounds
as against 85-90 pounds in the
crate.
Darby said the bags may be
stored up to three weeks. He
warned against tears and punc
tures, exposure to sun, freez
ing and poor air circulation
caused by piling the bags on
top of each other.
The initial shipments of the
Commission’s forest tree seed
lings went out last week. The
shipment of ornamentals, for
“Make Georgia Beautiful
Month” is scheduled for the
week of December 11. The
second shipment of these
species is slated for the week
of January 10.
Seedling application forms
may be obtained from Com
mission County Rangers, Coun
ty Agents, Soil Conservation
Service Technicians and Agri
cultural Conservation Program
Officers.
