Savannah Homes,
Gardens Tour
Set March 30-31
A unique feature of Savan
nah is her series of squares or
parks, planned in 1732 as rally
ing points in case of Indian or
Spanish attack. Twenty of
these parks remain. And in the
Spring, when these small oases
are ablaze with azaleas, dog
wood and wisteria, many of
the century-old elegantly furn
ished homes surrounding the
squares are open to the public
for the Tour of Savannah
Homes and Gardens.
The Tour this year, which
will be the thirty-second spon
sored by the women of Christ
Episcopal Church, will be held
March 30th and 31th. A can
dlelight Tour on Thursday
evening, March 30th, will show
five private homes plus the
stately Isaiah Davenport
House, and the recently re
novated Colonial Dames
House.
There will be two separate
Tours on Friday, March 31st,
one from 10 A. M. to 2 P. M.,
the other from 2 P. M. to 6 P.
M. In addition to the thirteen
elegant private homes to be
shown on these Tours will be
the world-reknowned Owens-
Thomas House, the Juliette
Gordon Low Birthplace and
the Sturges House, one of a
pair of handsome 19th century
town house mansions.
The ever-popular Factor’s
Fair will offer exotic plants,
rare books and prints, artistic
treasures and many attractive
items native to the city. The
Fair will be open to the pub
lic on Thursday, March 30th,
10 A. M. to 10 P. M., and Fri
day, March 31st. 10 A. M. to
5 P. M.
MORE TURKEYS
Turkey growers in Georgia
expect to produce 2,048,000
head in 1967 compared with
1,709,000 in 1966 or an increase
of 20 percent, according to the
State Crop Reporting Service.
Indications are that the major
ity of the heavy breeds in 1967
will be heavy whites.
BIG PEANUT YIELD
Georgia’s average yield of
peanuts for 1966 is currently
estimated at 1,725 pounds per
acre, the second highest on re
cord, according to J. Frank
McGill, agronomist with the
cooperative Extension Service.
