Kite Flying Is
Dangerous Near
Power Lines
Kite flying, a traditional
March activity in this area,
can be extremely dangerous,
according to E. E. Pritchard
of Blackshear, Georgia Power
Company local manager, who
has urged parents to take ev
ery precaution to assure that
children fly kites safely.
Mr. Pritchard suggested the
following rules for safety in
kite flying:
1. Fly kites on clear days,
never in rainy weather or
thunderstorms.
2. Fly kites in cleared areas
away from power lines, streets,
and highways.
3. Fly kites with dry cotton
string. Never use tinsel string,
wire, or any twine with metal
in it.
4. Fly kites made of paper,
fabric, or plastic completely
free of metal.
5. If a kite become entan
gled in electric power lines,
leave it alone. Do not attempt
to get it down.
The Georgia 4-H Club pro
gram has come a long way
since the first projects empha
sized the boy or girl with a
pig or calf. Dr. T. L. Walton,
state 4-H leader, points out
that the program is designed
now to meet the needs of
young people wherever they
live.
