Deceased Vets
Entitled to Four
Burial Benefits
Atlanta — Deceased veter
ans are entitled to four parti
cular burial benefits, Pete
Wheeler, Director of the
Georgia Department of Veter
ans Service, reports. The
benefits are available to all
veterans who served any
period during wartime in the
military or who served a full
enlistment during peacetime.
The widow or person who
incurred the burial and funer
al expenses of an eligible vet
eran may be awarded $250,
upon application, for such
expenses. Any eligible veter
an may be buried in a national
cemetery where space is avail
able.
Headstones or grave mark
ers may also be secured for
any such veteran. They will
be placed without application
when burial is in a national
cemetery, or may be request
ed for a private grave.
A U. S. flag, to drape the
coffin and later for presenta
tion to next of kin, will also
be presented upon request.
Flags may be secured at any
first class U. S. Post Office
or at the VA Regional Office
in Atlanta.
The spouse of a deceased
veteran may be buried in a
national cemetery, either in
the same grave or in the site
adjacent to the veteran, pro
vided such space is available.
If the wife or minor child pre
cedes the veteran in death,
the deceased may be interred
in a national cemetery if the
veteran presents a statement
of his desire to be buried there
at his death.
In Georgia, national ceme
teries are located at Ander
sonville and Marietta.
BATHING SUITS
Just rinsing the bathing suit
under running water won’t
wash away salt deposits,
chlorine, sand crystals sharp
enough to cut fabric and oth
er foreign matter. Home eco
nomists with the Cooperative
Extension Service suggest that
you wash your bathing suit in
warm soap or detergent suds
after each swim.

WINTER GRAZING
TIPS OFFERED
BY AGRONOMIST
Now is the time to make
plans for winter grazing, ac
cording to J. R. Johnson, head
of the Extension Service
agronomy department at the
University of Georgia. In ord
er to have fall grazing, land
should be broken in August
and then harrowed into a
good seed bed.
Soil tests should be taken
to determine lime needs, Mr.
Johnson said. Lime is essen
tial to high yields of quality
grazing. Lime supplies cal
cium essential to livestock de
velopment. Lime also corrects
the acidity and regulates the
pH for optimum growth of
winter grazing crops.
“Now is also the time to
buy high quality seed. It is
impossible to make seed oats
out of feed oats. Buy only
recommended varieties of
known origin or purity,” Mr.
HARRIS NAHUNTA
Johnson said.
Check the germination.
Four bushels of oats, or 2%
bushels of rye or wheat per
acre is enough to get a good
stand if the seed is high in
germination — at least 85 per
cent. Otherwise the seeding
rate will have to be increased
which will cost money.
Be sure to read the seed tag
and do not buy seed of in
ferior quality with weed seed
present. If small grains are
planted containing weed seed,
the eradication costs to free
the fields of these weeds may
be very costly, the Extension
specialist pointed out. So the
cheapest seed is weed-free
seed.
Winter grazing planted ear
ly will provide high amounts
of cheap protein in fall. Win
ter grazing planted late will
not provide grazing in fall.
Good planting dates are
September 1 in the Piedmont
and September 15 to October
15 in the Coastal Plain. Win
ter grazing should be seeded
the middle of August in the
mountains.

year, 15,709 certificates were
issued.
State Superintendent of
Schools Jack P. Nix said, “I
am delighted with the high
number of qualified teachers

during the coming school
year.”
Over 6,000 T-4 certificates
