VISITORS SHOWERED WITH GIFTS
Patterson Entertains
3 Japanese Officials
By Mershon Aspinwall, Jr.
Patterson rolled out the red
carpet last Thursday and Fri
day to welcome three Japanese
officials who returned the ges
ture in the traditional Japan
ese friendly fashion.
At a covered dish supper
Thursday night the guest of
the City of Patterson were
showered with gifts and hon
ors and fed royally as the
host city and neighboring
friends paid tribute to the
three who has requested they
visit Patterson while on a
goodwill tour of the United
States.
The outpouring of friend
ship continued Friday morning
when they visited Patterson
High School, participated in
an outdoor chapel program,
visited classrooms and talked
with students.
Yoshifumi Shibatate, chair
man of Kagoshima Prefectur
al Assembly, Hideji Yamagu
chi, director of General Affairs
Department of the assembly,
and Aishi Sumiyoshi, assis
tant chief of the tourism in
dustry section of the assem
bly, also visited Jesup’s Ray
onier plant before being
driven to Jacksonville to catch
a plane to Miami by J. O. Ec
hols who coordinated the visit
activities.
Thursday afternoon the visi
tors toured Waycross-Ware
Tech in Waycross, the Georgia
Forestry Commision’s eighth
district office at Bargunza in
Ware County, Dr. Bronze You
mans’ dairy and the farm
home of Terry Boatright at
Bristol.
The honors bestowed Thurs
day night in the school cafe
teria included presentation of
of a proclamation by Mayor
Nesbert Thomas giving them
honory citizenship, honory
membership in Patterson
High’s FFA Chapter presented
by the chapter officers, and
presentations by .master of
ceremonies Steve Nimmer,
Pierce and Brantley represent
ative, in behalf of Gov. Lester
Mattox, a document naming
them on the governor’s staff.
Gifts were numerous and
included syrup, pecans, pea
nuts, honey, barbecue sauce,
cigars, state flags, Stuckey
products, Georgia picture
packets, and the keys to the
city.
Yamaguchi laughingly com
mented that with so much to
take back to Japan they would
have to charter a special plane.
Shibatate and Sumiyoshi were
equally outspoken in expres
sions of gratitude for the hos
pitality shown.
Sumiyoshi spoke English
well and translated most of the
comments of the others. Much
laughter followed efforts of
locals as well as the Japanese
to speak the others language.
Several times the visitors

spoke of the mutual friendship
which existed and said that
such would “deepen under
standing and contribute to
peace in the world.” They show
great interest in the sister
school relationship which has
been established between Pat
terson High School and Kan
oya Agriculture High School.
Kanoya is the home town of
Shibatate.
The visit to Patterson and
the area was a follow-up of a
trip made by Echols in May.
He visited Kagoshima, Japan,
while on a people to people
world trip. A sister state re
lationship with Kogoshima was
established while Carl Sanders
was govenor.
Entertainment for the even
ing was furnished by Mrs.
Johnny Strickland, Mrs. Clara
Echols, and Linton Raulerson.
Echols showed film slides tak
en in Kagoshima while visiting
there.
A number of out of county
friends, including three who
accompanied Echols on the
world tour, were on hand for
the occasion.

Legislators to
Set up Office
Brunswick, Ga. — State
legislators from the Eighth
! Congressional District, farthest
removed from Atlanta, plan an
office in the State Capitol to
help advance common inter
ests.
The office will be staffed
with a secretary during ses
sions of the General Assembly.
Several other Congressional
districts already have such
offices and they have been
felt to be effective.
“We realize that there is
power in numbers and the
purpose of the association is
to unify our strength in get
ting the State leadership to
give us our fair share of the
appropriations,” said Sen Ron
ald Adams of Brunswick, who
is serving as temporary chair
man. Rep. Richard A. Scarlett
of Brunswick is temporary
secretary.
Sen. Adams said no plans
had been adopted for financ
ing the office but the legisla-
tors have agreed to pay S2O
annual dues to the association,
which was established at a
meeting held on St. Simons Is
land by the lawmakers. Sen.
Adams pointed out his own
senatorial district also extends
into the First Congressional
District and said he would par
ticipate in an association there
; if established.
i
t The next meeting will be
1 held Dec. 10 at Steve Nimmers
j fish camp in Pierce County.
. On the agenda are such items
of district interest as utility
tax and condemnation rights,
1 timber severance taxes, and
* game and fish department
• policies.
