Board of Commissioners of
Roads and Revenues, of
Brantley County, Georgia,
levying taxes for the year
Nineteen Hundred and Sixty
seven (1967.)
IT IS HEREBY ORDERED
AND RESOLVED, by the
Board of Commissioners of
Roads and Revenues, of
Brantley County, Georgia,
sitting for County purposes on
this the 27th day of November,
1967, that there be and is
hereby levied and assessed for
the year 1967, upon all tax
able property of said County
of Brantley, State of Georgia,
subject to taxation, same to
provide the necessary reven
ues and requirements of said
County, the following taxes
for the following purposes, to
wit;
1. To pay the expenses of
the administration of the
County Government 6/10ths
mills.
2. To pay the principal and
interest of any debts of the
County and to provide a sink
ing fund therefore 8/10ths
mills.
3. To build and repair the
public buildings and bridges,
three and 64/100ths mills.
4. To pay the expenses of
the Courts, and maintenances
and support of prisoners and
to pay sheriffs and coroners
and for expense of litigation
6/10ths mills.
5. To build and maintain a
system of Roads (County) one
and 6/10ths mills.
6. For public health purposes
in said County, and for the
collect on and preservation of
records of vital statistics, one
and 2/10ths mills.
7. To support paupers
4/10ths mills.
8. To pav County Agricul
tural and Home Demonstra
tion Agents, 16/looths mills.
9. To provide for the pay
ment of old age assistance to
aged persons in need, and for
the payment of assistance of
the needy, blind and to de
pendent children and other
welfare benefits, provided
that no person' shall be entitl
ed to the assistance herein
authorized who does not quali
fy for such assistance in every
respect, in accordance with
the enactments of the General
Assembly which may be of
force and effect prescribing
the aualifications for benefi
ciaries hereunder; provided
that no indebtedness of liabi
lity against the County shall
ever be created for the pur
pose herein stated, in excess of
the taxes lawfully levied each
fiscal year under the acts of
the general Assembly autho
rized hereunder for such
purposes. 8/10ths mills.
10. To provide for the crea
tion of a fund to be used for
assisting, promoting and en
couraging the location of new
industries in said County, and
for the development of Agri
culture, in Brantlev County,
Georgia. 4/10ths mills.
11. To provide for Fire
Protection, for Forest lands
and to further conservation of
natural resources. One mill.
12. To provide Medical Care
and Hospitalization for the
indigent sick people to Brant
lev County, Georgia. 4/10ths
mill.
13. To provide for payment
of workmen’s compensation,
insurance for the employees
of said County as provided for
by law. 8/10ths mill.
14. Making a total in the
aggregate of Twelve and
40/100 Dollars ($12.40) on the
One Thousand Dollars, of
taxable property of said
Brantley County, Georgia,
exclusive of the levy to pay
charges for educational pur
poses and to pay school bonds.
15. To pay charges for edu
cational purposes and to pay
levied only in' strict compli
ance of law, and under and by
virtuue of the recommenda
tion of The Board of Educa
tion, of Brantley County,
Georgia at a meeting held on
the 24th dav of November,
1967. a certified copy of said

of Education of Brantley
County, Georgia, recommend
ed and it is hereby recom
mended to the Board of Com
missioners of Roads and Rev
enues, of Brantley County,
Georgia, that a tax for support
and maintenance of education
for the year 1967 A. D. of 9
Mills or Nine Dollars on the
One Thousand Dollars be lev
ied on all taxable property in
said county of Brantley (save
that exempted by the Consti
tution and the Laws of the
State of Georgia, as to person
al and homestead exemption.)
and % Mills be levied on tax

Constitution and the Laws of

Perry Middleton
Died at Atkinson
Sunday Morning
Mr. Perry Emory Middleton,
65, passed away early Sunday
morning, November 26, in the
Atkinson community follow
ing a sudden illness and his
death brings personal sorrow
to many throughout this sec
tion.
A native of Wayne, now
Brantley County, Mr. Mid
dleton' was the son of the late
Benjamin Grooms and Eliza
beth Courson Middleton. He
received his early education
in the schools of Wayne Coun
ty and later attended South
Georgia College in Douglas.
For a number of years he
was engaged as a naval store
operator and later served as
Clerk of the City Court in
Brunswick until his retire
ment due to declining health.
He was a member of the -
manuel Methodist Church and
for the major portion' of his
adult life resided in Bruns
wick. For the past two years,
he had been a resident of the
Atkinson community.
Survivors include one sis
ter, Mrs. Agnes Ritch of Hor
tense; one brother, J. V. Mid
dleton of Hortense: his step
mother, Mrs. B. G. Middleton
of Hortense: three half-sisters,
Mrs. Alice Miller of Hortense,
Mrs. D. E. Crews of Waycross
and Mrs. J. J. Smith of Kings
port, Tenn.; three half-broth
ers, J. B. Middleton', H. L.
Middleton and H. A. Middle
ton, all of Hortense.
Several nieces, nephews and
other relatives also survive.
Funeral services were held
at three o’clock Tuesday after
noon, November 28, from
the Emanuel Methodist Church
in Glynn County with the Rev.
S. Larry King officiating.
Entombment followed in the
family plot in the Palmetto
Cemetery in Brunswick.

Smith, Henry Berry, H. D.
Bell, W. W. Cave, Sr., Lester
Harrison and Bill Livingston.

Venesta Gail is the name of the
new baby girl born to Mr. and
Mrs. Junior Wilson on November
22 in Jesup Hospital. She weighed
five pounds and eight ounces.

Proceedings of Brantley
County Commissioners
The Board of Commissioners
of Roads and Revenue of
Brantley County, Georgia met
in regular session on Tuesday,
November 7, 1967 at 9:00 A.-
M. in their office in the County
Court House with four mem
bers present.
They discussed various
County affairs including mak
ing an appointment for a mem
ber of the Commission to fill
the unexpired term of the late
Mr. S. B. Highsmith from the
Lulaton-Atkinson District.
They .made no formal Resolu
tion on' this matter but dead
locked two to two on whom
they should appoint and shel
ved the matter until another
meeting.
A resolution' was made by
Commissioner Riggins and se
cond by Commissioner Griffin
to excent the low bid submit
ted by Nimmer Chevrolet: Co.,
on one 1968 half ton’Chevrolet
Pickup to be used by the Road
Dept. Commissioner Eldridge
refrained from voting on this
matter.
Mr. Frankland from the
Carlton Co. met with Com
missioners and discussed the
condition of the 18 year old
Bulldozer the County now
owns and told them approxi
mately how much it would
cost to make the necessary
repairs on the old machine and
how much it would cost to
purchase a new machine. To
repair the old machine it
would be approximately
SIO,OOO. with no guaran
tee. The cost of a new machine
would be $35,280. or they
would trade for $30,000. dif
ference. The Commisioners de
cided to take this under con
sideration and to make a de
cision at a later date. After
making the above Resolution
and discussing the above Bus
iness, they advised the Clerk
of Commissioners and Sheriff
Dept, to secure Bids for 1968
Police Special Automobile to
be bought at a later date for
the Sheriff Dept. After finish
ing the above business they
paid the following bills for the
month of October.

Senator Dean
Plans Tour of
Brantley County
State Senator, Roscoe Dean,
Jr., announced this week that
he would begin his annual
“People to People” tour of the
Sixth Senatorial District with
in the next few days in order
that the tour can be completed
before the January Session of
the Legislature.
“I invite everyone to visit
with me when I am in their
county and give me the bene
fit of their suggestions, ideas
and advice on what they want
done in l State Government. I
will also be happy to discuss
any problems anyone may
have that I can help solve. It
is my sincere hope and prayer
that the people will turn out
and take advantage of my
visit and efforts to be of ser
vice to them," Senator Dean
Stated.

December 5, and Wednesday,
December 6.

clock Wednesday morning, No
vember 29, for Willie Joe
Johns, Jr., infant son of Mr.
and Mrs. Willie Joe Johns of
Okeechobee, Fla., with the
Rev. L. C. Allen' conducting
the rites.
In addition to the parents,
survivors include the maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S.-
T. Blount of Okeechobee; the
paternal grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Ruel Johns of Nahunta;
the maternal great grandmoth
er, Mrs. Sam Blount of Okee
chobee.
Several aunts, uncles and
other relatives also survive.

School Plans
Student Council
Brantley County High School is
organizing a Student Council and
have already elected Council of
ficers.
Candidates for president were
Gary Veli and Wayne Patten both
seniors. Vice-presidential candi
ates were Gail Johns and Rita
Fain, both juniors.
Elections were held Wednesday
November 22.
Officers elected are president,
Wayne Patten; vice-president,
Rita Fain; secretary, Scott Le
wis; treasurer, Debra Strickland;
reporter, Ruby Chesser; advisor,
Mr. Eugene Wiley.

Dr. Robert Gee Witty, pastor,
Central Baptist Church, Jackson
ville, Fla., will bring the inspira
tional message of the evening. Dr.
Witty was instrumental in the
founding of Luther Rice Seminary,
Jacksonville. A noted author,
lecturer and orator, he holds sev
eral degrees, including a Ph.D
from the University of Florida.
The officers of the Okefenokee
Baptist Association are anticipat
ing a record attendance for this
important program.

Edith Middleton Wins
S SOO Scholarship Award
At National 4-H Meet
Edith Middleton didn’t sus
pect when she was preparing
dinner for a working family
and six brothers and sisters
that her efforts would pay off
in a national 4-H champion
ship.
The 17-year-old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Julian Middleton
of Hortense, Ga., just won a
SSOO college scholarship and
nationwide recognition at the
National 4-H Club Congress.
“I’ve been cooking since I
was in the fifth grade,” the
Brantley County high school
senior said. “But I still re
member the first meal I fixed
biscuits and pork chops.
“I burned the biscuits and
the meal came out half-hot
and half-cold.
But since that time, Edith
has prepared more than 2,000
dishes and 800 meals. She en
tered the 4-H food-nutrition
project seven years ago.
Monday morning Edith was
named national champion and
received congratulations from
Televisions’s Eddie Albert
(“Green Acres”).
She said her oldest sister
got ber interested in 4-H club
work, because they were al
ways entering contests and
winning.
Six of the Middleton' fa
mily’s children have been 4-H
members.
Edith plans to enter Georgia
CoPege in Milledgeville and
seek a career in home econom
ics.
“I hope to go into (agricul
tural) extension work with
4-H,” the active senior said.
She is also editor of her high
school newspaper, the “Pine
Cone,” and president of the
Future Teachers of America.

patient in an Agusta Hospital fol
lowing a heart attact on Novem
ber 14. He was removed from in
tensive care Friday Nov. 24, and
is able to have visitors.

To demonstrate her enthusi
asm for foods, Edith organized
a class of 30 fifth and sixth
grade girls and taught them
her cooking secrets. This pro
ject landed her on television
and radio programs throughout
Georgia. She won' the 1967 state
teen fare contest and was
named a Georgia Master 4-H
Club member.
Her speciality is “Mexicala
meat pie” and she has prepared
it 31 times for groups, clubs
and organizations. Her advice
to beginning cooks is "follow
your recipe” but that doesn’s
always work.
“For instance, I found out
that cooking at various alti
tudes makes a difference. The
difference in the texture of
corn 1 meal can change a re
cipe.”
Edith is president of the
Palmetto 4-H Club.

4-H Club Achievements

is a patient in Memorial Hospital
in Waycross.
Mrs. Beulah Hickox is doing fine
after undergoing surgery in Way
cross hospital on Tuesday of this
week.
Mrs. Owen Strickland of Swains
boro is in Nahunta this week to be
near her sister, Mrs. Beulah Hic
kox who is in the hospital.
The families of Mr. Carl
Broome, Mrs. Paul Chaffin, Mrs.
Maude Chapman and Mr. and
Mrs. Morgan Milner met at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Broome
on Sunday for a reunion. There
were thirty-three members pres
ent.
Kenneth W. Popwell, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Clinton Popwell of the
Browntown community, left Sat
urday, Nov. 25, for Vietnam. He
has been stationed at Sheppard
Air Force Base, Witchata Falls,
Texas. He is an Airman First
Class and has been in the service
two years. He will be at Danang,
the American air force base in
Vietnam.

phases of the services at Pleasant
These activities begin Satur
day, Dec., 2, at 7:30. Rev. Devee
Brown, Missionary to Honduras,
Central America, will speak and
show slides and curios of his work
as a foreign Missionary, during
a Youth Fellowship.
On Sunday, Dec. 3, at 11:00 A.-
M., Rev. Brown will be the guest
speaker in the morning Worship
Service.
Other mission activities of the
month will be: Week of Prayer

Travis McDonald, former mis
sionary to Africa, will teach a
study course, “Arrows to Atoms”,
concerning mission work in Af
rica, on Thursday, Dec. 14.

sionary Union and Brotherhood
will present Foreign Mission Fea
tures during each service in De
cember.
