'Make Georgia Beautiful'
Program to Last All Year Long
The “Make Georgia Beauti
ful” program has come a long
way since that week-long tree
planting and anti-litter spree :
in January, 1965. It was ex- <
tended to an entire month in
1966 and ’67, and now it looks 1
like the program will be a '
year-round undertaking in 19-
68.
At least Thomas G. Williams
Jr., head of the Cooperative
Extension Service landscape
department at the University
of Georgia, has suggested to
county agents and county Ex
tension home economists that
“a continuing educational pro
gram on beautification be car-
ried out the entire year.”
Mr. Williams, who has been
chairman of “Make Georgia
Beautiful” the past three
years, said the promotional
program of combating litter
and planting flowering trees
has had a significant influence
on the landscape of the state.

“In my opinion, we have at
tracted attention to problems
and stimulated interest” he
stated. “Now we plan to settle
down to a real educational pro
gram of assistance to county
beautification committees,
clubs and individuals - mainly
from the local level.
Despite the thousands of
flowering trees planted and
the tons of litter pick
ed up. Mr. Williams be
lieves the greatest accomplish
ment of the program since
1965 has been the organization
of a beautification committee
in virtually every county.
“Some of these county
groups have done a remarkable
job of planning and executing
lasting landscape develop
ments.” he said.
It is through these local com
mittees that most of the beau
tification activities will be
carried out in 1968, according
to Mr. Williams. In most cases

Mr. Williams said the county

county office for use during

throughout the rest of the year.
WHAT IS FLAVOR?
The most common answer is
that the flavor is the sum to
tal of taste and smell. Accord
ing to Mrs. Rita H. Waters,
home economists - nutrition,
with the University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension Service,
the taste and smell of food
mingle together to give flavor.

PRACTICAL
FAMILY
LIVING
C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S spells
dicious food! You’ll find that
many facets make a meal plea
surable. For a meal to be as
pretty as a picture and a gas
tronomical adventure, food va
lue, color, texture, size, and
flavor must lend their own
distinct qualities. Harmony
and contrast play important
roles, too.
Good meals begin with pa
per and pencil with variety
being the key to sucessful
meal planning. First, you need
to chose foods from each of
the Four Food Groups. Select
four servings daily from the
fruit and vegetable food group.
One of these servings must be
a vitamin C rich food and an
other must be either a dark
green, leafy vegetable or a
deep yellow vegetable to pro
vide vitamin A. The other two
servings may be any fruit or
vegetable.
Be sure to include two serv
ings of milk for adults and
three servings for children and
teen-agers. Two or more serv
ings of meats, eggs, poultry
or dry beans are needed each
day. Round out the holiday
meals with four or more serv
ings of breads or cereals. Eat
the recommended servings
from each of the Basic Four
Food Groups to receive ade
quate daily supplies of essen
tial nutrients.
Food not only nourishes the
body, it appeals to the senses.
The most attractive meals in
clude foods with different vis
ual characteristics. You notice
color first. Reds, yellows or
greens contrast with the coiors
of meats, potatoes and bread.
Important, too, is the retention
of natural color during cook
ing. For brighter colors, cook
fruits and vegetables only un
til fork tender.

Texture is a joy of eating.
Have variety. Choose foods
that have contrasting textures.
Shape and size of pieces are
also related to the pleasures
of food. Plan an assortment of
round, square and miscellane
ous shapes to quicken interest.
The proof of your meals is
flavor. Prepare foods with care
to develope the natural flavors.
Don’t overcook. Use spices and
herbs to enhance the natural
