Council Studies
Accidents of
Young Drivers
In a recent Georgia Safety
Council survey of 1967 fatal
traffic accidents, attention was
given to young drivers, 25
years old and under. The sur
vey took 60 single-car crashes
at random involving these
young people, and it showed
that 72 deaths occurred in the
crashes.
In 47 of 60 cases studied, or
more than 75 per cent, the in
vestigating officers logged in
their reports that speed was
a determining factor. In' one
case, it was reported that the
speed was unknown. The
speeds at which most of these
vehicles crashed ranged from
50 miles per hour in a 35-mile
zone up to more than 100 miles
per hour.
Also, the records show that
15 of these young drivers def
initely were under the influ
ence of alcohol.
From the standpoint of all
single car crashes in Georgia
during 1967, more than 500
persons have died. In the ran
dom cases taken by the Geor
gia Safety Council involving
only younger drivers, there is
a good case to be made for tak
ing some kind of steps t 0 influ
ence the young drivers to slow
down. Speed may not kill, but
a car out of control due to ex
cessive speed is a deadly wea
pon.

SEED TAGS
Have you ever wondered just
what is in a bag of seed? You
can’t tell what is in a bag by
looking at it. But by reading
the tag on the bag you can.
According to James E. Jack
son, agronomist with the Uni
versity of Georgia Cooperative
Extension Service, Georgia
law requires that all seed of
fered for sale must be labeled
with an analysis tag revealing
the kind of seed, germination,
purity, lot number, date of
test and certain other informa
tion.
“Knowing how and taking
the time to read these seed
tags can save Georgia farmers
a lot of time, trouble and
money,” Mr. Jackson said.
How to read the analysis
tag can be found in Mr. Jack
son’s new publication, “It’s On
The Tag If It’s In The Bag.”
which is available at local
County Extension Service of
fices. Also included in
the publication is infor
mation of the different
types of seed tags, how seed
is certified and a full expla
nation of the items which ap
pear on approved seed tags in
Georgia.
“To be sure you’re getting
top quality seed of known ori
ginl and of superior adapted
varieties and hybrids, always
look for seed produced under
the certification program of the
Georgia Crop Improvement
Association,” Mr. Jackson
advised.
PECAN SECRET
The secret of successfully
storing pecan kernels at home
is: use quality nuts, pack
dry, protect from in
sects, keep cool and
prevent interchange of
flavors with other products,
according to home economists

gia Cooperative Extension Ser
vice.
