Value of a Gym

Once again Claxton has been chosen as the site
for one of the area basketball tournaments. It shows
that the people of our area like the facilities that we
have provided here for athletics.
Once again it proves that wisdom of the decision
to build these facilities for our people. Not only do
our own young people get the benefit of this type of
athletic activity, but the adults enjoy this activity, as
evidenced by their attendance at the games.
The selection as a tournament site will bring
several hundred dollars to the community. Maybe the
merchants won’t feel it directly, but the funds will
go into many activities that would otherwise be sup
ported by the community in some other way.
So, before we furfs too loudly about the small
tax it takes to pay for this improvement, let’s recall
what it has meant to the life of the community, the
school life, as well as the economic life. So far, it is
money well spent.

New Gas Light Tower Offices
Atlanta Gas Light Company,
largest distributor of natural
gas in' the Southeast, has just
completed a move into its new
office building, 25-story Gas
Light Tower in downtown
Atlanta.
The gas company occupies
the first four floors of this
beautiful new building, ap
proximately 50.000 square
feet. Gas Light Tower is nam
ed for its major tenant.
“This wonderful new facili
ty,” according to a gas official,
“will allow us to provide bet
ter service to more than 50,-
000 customers throughout
Georgia. We are especially
proud of the great advance in
gas technology it represents
with its Total Gas Energy
system.”
TOTAL GAS
ENERGY SYSTEM
The Total Gas system
uses natural gas as its
sole source of energy in
providing heating, air condi
tioning, water heating and even
electricity for Gas Light Tow
er. The building is the first
high rise office tower in the
Southeast to employ such a
system.
In the all-gas system, natur
al gas-fired turbines are used
to drive generators which
meet all the building’s electri
cal needs. The exhaust heat
from these turbines is used to

Gas Light Tower is located
just two doors south of the
company’s former main offices
at the corner of Peachtree and
Harris which the gas company
occupied since 1929. The area
around the new building is
known as “Peachtree Center,”
a coordinated design complex
featuring a total environment
in which people live, work and
nlay. Among Gas Light Tow
er’s neighbors are the Peach
tree Center Office Tower, the
Merchandise Mart and the Re
gency Hyatt House hotel.
Trees, malls shrubs and
fountains tastefully blend to
gether to create a pleasant,
casual atmosphere in Peach
tree Center.
Exterior walls of Gas Light
are of pre-cast, exposed ag
gregate mosaic panels similar
to those in the Peachtree Cen
ter Building. Each panel con
tains two six-foot windows of
bronze-tinted glass.
High above Peachtree Street
a 77-foot aerial walkway joins
the 21st floor of Gas Light
Tower with the top floor of
the Merchandise Mart.
Edwards and Portman,
architechs, are designers for
Gas Light Tower. The me
chanical engineer was Britt
Aiderman, Jr.; electrical en
gineer, Morris E. Harrison;
general contractor, J. A. Jones;
mechanical contractor, Sam P.
Wallace and electrical con
tractor, Brooks Allison. Tram
mell Crow and John Portman
are the owners. -
The company serve's 174
cities -from Chickamauga to
Brunswick. It is an investor
owned corporation with more
than 12.000 holders of common
stock, about 70 per cent of
whom live in Georgia. The
company also does business
under the trade names of
Georgia Natural Gas and Sa
vannah Gas Company.
Atlanta Gas Light Company
is the second oldest business
in Georgia, having begun ser
vice to the City of Atlanta in
1855 with 50 gas lights. It is
Atlanta’s oldest corporate citi
zen.

great deal of milk. According
to home economist with the
University of Georgia Cooper
ative Extension Service, in the
United States food supplies,
milk provides three-fourths of
all calcium, about one-half
the riboflavin and one-fourth
the protein.
