electric heat.
Any heating system will give you heat. But if heat
comes in hot blasts, with cold spells in between,
it's not comfortable.
After all, your own temperature is a pretty con
stant thing. Is the temperature constant in each
room of your home? It will be with electric heat.
Not for just a few moments, but until you decide
to change the temperature. And a simple flick of
the thermostat does that.
Electric heat offers you room-by-room control
or a central system. Either way, the temperature
stays within one degree of the thermostat setting.
It’s that little extra comfort that makes electric
heat so nice. Especially for the little things in life.

N. F. O. LEADERS SURVEY LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTER SCENE
NFO Action Puts
Pierce County in
News Spotlight
The destruction of approxi
mately 100 hogs and other
farm products by members of
the National Farmers Organi
zation last Wednesday a t
Blackshear brought statewide
and national attention to this
area
Protesting low prices, the
NFO members dumped the
hogs in a 10-foot trench at
the Blackshear city dump, shot
them with rifles and buried
them, using two bulldozers.
Also destroyed was one cow,
a number of chickens and
some 300 dozen eggs.
Representatives of television
stations in Atlanta and Jack
sonville photographed the
slaughter operations and daily
news media gave wide cover
age to the event.
Wendell Waters, president
of the Pierce County NFO
chapter, said he had received
many telephone calls, letters
and telegrams from other a
reas about the killings. He
said most expressed sympathy
for the farmers in their plight
of low prices for livestock and
other products.
However, a number of pro
tests were received by Waters
or printed in daily newspapers,
calling the hog killings “bru
tal”, “sadistic,” and “waste
ful.”
A number of persons said
the animals should have been
given to the needy, rather
than being destroyed.
Waters said this week that
he felt the action of the NFO
had successfully focussed at
tention on the farmer’s prob
lem of low prices.
“Everyone admits we have
a serious problem,” he said,
“but nobody seems to know
what to do about it”
The NFO is currently con
ducting a holding campaign
nationwide on grains and live
stock.
Waters says he hopes fur
ther talks can be arranged
with the nation’s large meat
packers to work out year-to
year contracts at reasonable
prices.
The NFO has singled out
Swift and Company, the na
tion's largest meat packer, as
a target of boycott action be
cause of the company’s refu
sal to agree to a price con
tract.
Several varieties of Swift
products were burned at the
hog killing site last Wednes
day.
Waters received one tele
gram protesting the hog
slaughter from a group of 20
persons in Atalnta, including
Julian Bond and William Far
mer.
The telegram said, “In pro
test of South Georgia’s brutal
and sadistic slaughter of ani
mals, we will cease purchas
ing pork products.”
An Atlanta housewife wrote,
“There won’t be any pork on
my table again ever.”
An agent of the Atlanta
Humane Society threatened
arrests if the hog killings con
tinued. calling them “inhu
mane.”
Waters said this week. NFO
members are as yet undecided
on whether to hold additional
hog killings, but said the; or
ganieation would continue
with its efforts to seek fair
prices.
