Soybean Boom
On in Georgia
Few crops in Georgia have
caught on faster and grown
more rapidly than soybeans.
As recently as 1963 the state
had only 91,000 acres of beans.
This was up to 542,000 acres in
1967. Per acre yields during
the same period increased
from 16.5 bushels to 24 bush
els.
Even so, according to J. R.
Johnson, head of the Univer
sity of Georgia Extension Serv
ice agronomy department, soy
bean production is just now
beginning to realize its poten
tial.
The end of the boom is not
yet in sight. Mr. Johnson ex
pects a 1968 increase in acre
age of at least 100,000 — on
the way to a goal of 1 million
acres by 1970. “This is one
crop Georgia farmers definite
ly need to plant more of,” he
declared.
Explaining why, Mr. John
son said the state’s poultry and
livestock industry needs 34
million bushels annually just
for feed. Farmers produced
only 13 million bushels in
1967, leaving a deficit of 21
million' bushels. “There is no
question that a tremendous
market for soybeans exists
within our state,” he added.
Already, the agribusiness
activitity generated by the
soybean is significant, and Mr.
Johnson believes this will be
“nothing short of amazing”
when the crop reaches its full
potential.
To grow the 542,000 acres
last year, for example, Georgia
farmers spent about sl6 % mil
lion in direct production costs.
Seedsmen received near
ly $1 million of this.
About $4% million went
to fertilizer, lime and seed
treated materials. Near
ly $2 million was spent for in
secticides and herbicides. Ex
penses for machinery, gasoline
and oil came to approximately
$6% million.
Mr. Johnson pointed out
that two new soybean pro
cessing plants — one already
completed at Gainesville and
another under construction
at Valdosta — have increased
both the soybean market and
the potential for greater pro
duction.
USED CHAIRS
Want to buy a good used
straight chair? Miss Mary
Frances White, home econo
mist with the University of
Georgia Cooperative Service,
says to be sure the chair is
strong, stands flat on the floor
and is one you can use with
out much repair work.
Georgia’s wildlife resources
are responsible for about SSOO
million being pumped into the
state’s economy each year, ac
cording to Dave Ahnand, wild
life specialist with the Coop
erative Extension Service.
