Paul Revere 250
And Firecracker
Daytona Beach, Fla.—When
Daytona International Speed
way celebrates Independence
Day, it does it right.
Fireworks . . . 650 miles of
racing ... 40 of the nation’s
top stock car drivers and cars
. . . 50 of the top Grand Tour
ing drivers and cars . . .
bands .. . over $95,000
in prize money.
Any way you look at it, it
will be a big celebration.
On tap at the Speedway is
a big holiday double-header
with the second annual Paul
Revere 250 starting at mid
night, July 3, and the tenth
annual Firecracker 400 be
ginning at 10 a.m. on July
4th.
The Paul Revere 250 was
an instant success last year
with thousands of fans watch
ing the “midnight ride” as it
has been named by sports
writers. Cars racing around
the speedway’s international
3.81 mile track and road
course is enough attraction in
itself. But when they are
running at night with head
lights, that’s something else
again.
The race, carrying $23,000-
plus in posted awards, is for
the NASCAR Grand Touring
Division and SCCA Trans-
American cars this year. This
brings together the sporty
Camaros, Mustangs, Cougars,
Darts, Barracudas and Javelins
of the over two-liter group.
Winners gain points toward
the coveted manufacturer’s
championship.
A dazzling fireworks display
precedes the race.
The 1968 Indianapolis 500
winner, Bobby Unser of Al
buquerque, New Mexico, heads
this year’s entries. He’ll be
driving a 1968 Chevrolet Ca
maro prepared by veteran
mechanic Smokey Yunick of
Daytona. Among the other top
names already entered are
John McComb of Melbourne,
Fla., in a Camaro, John Ryan
of Griffin, Ga., in a Porsche,
Peter Gregg of Jacksonville,
Fla., in a Porsche and Roy
Tyner and Buck Baker in
Camaros.
Many of the fans who watch
from the infield stay on to
see the running of the $72,000
plus Firecracker 400 which
starts not many hours after
the early-morning finish of the
Paul Revere.
The high - speed summer
classic is contested around the
Speedway’s high-banked, 2.5-
mile trioval at amazing speeds.
Darel Dieringer of Charlotte,
N. C., who will drive a 1968
Plymouth, holds the qualify
ing record for the Firecracker
at 179.802 miles per hour.
But that record might fall |
by as much as ten miles an j
hour. Cale Yarborough of;
Charlotte. N. C., set the track I

Truck Driver's
Commandments
Professional truck drivers
throughout the country follow
these “ten commandments” of
the road:
—Check brakes, lights and
other equipment before start
ing out, and periodically dur
ing each trip.
—Park all personal problems
at the curb when starting to
drive.
—When on the road, observe
all state laws and respect the
laws of nature governing mo
mentum, deceleration, centri
fugal force and gravity.
—Watch out for children and
pedestrians.
—Don’t tailgate. Keep e
nough distance between your
vehicle and the one ahead to
allow faster vehicles to pass.
Make every proper effort to
permit following traffic to
pass on long grades and per
mit delayed traffic to pass at
the top of a long grade.
—Never debate the right
of-way — give it!
—Never take a drink while
on the road or before start
ing a trip.
—Don’t fight sleep. If drow
sy, get off the road and take
a short rest.
—Don’t hesitate to slack off
and be ready to stop the in
stant potential danger appears.
Drive so that your vehicle is
under control at all times.
—Give other motorists the
breaks that you wish he’d give
you.
WASTING MONEY
You may be wasting your
money and time if you apply
fertilizer around your shrub
bery and fail to supply the
proper amount of water. Ac
cording to Gerald Smith, hor
ticulturist with the University
of Georgia Extension Service,
fertilizers are effective only
when ample water is present
in the soil.
qualifying record last Febur
ary at 189.222 miles per hour.
Yarborough, seeking to be
come the first driver to win
three straight Grand National
races here, won the Firecrack
er last year and the Daytona
500 in Feburary and will be
driving a 1968 Mercury.
Sam McQuagg of Columbus,
Ga., who will be driving a
Dodge Charger, established
the race record when he won
the 1966 running at the aver
age speed of 153.813 miles per
hour.
Among the others already
entered are two-time Daytona
500 winner Richard Petty,
USAC ace Mario Andretti,
Paul Goldsmith, Lee Roy Yar
brough, Donnie and Bobby
Allison, Charlie Glotzbach,
Tiny Lund, Bobby Isaac, Bud
dy Baker, David Pearson and
Bud Moore.
