Potatoes for
October Treats
Potatoes are plentiful
That’s the word from the
Consumer and Marketing Ser
vice. October is the chief har
vest month for late-summer
and fall potatoes and south
eastern consumers will find
potato prices attractive.
Here are some tempting
dishes that feature ootatoes:
POTATO - HAM PATTIES
— Chop 1 small onion. Mix
onion, 2-12 cups finely cut-up
cooked ham or canned lunch
eon meat, 2 cups cold mashed
potatoes and 1 egg. Shape into
12 patties. Brown patties on
both sides in just enough fat
or oil to keep from sticking.
Makes 6 servings, 2 patties
each.
CRUSTY BAKED POTA
TOES — Pare 6 medium-size
potatoes and dry well on a
towel. Roll each potato in I|2
cup melted butter or marga
rine, then in 1 cup finely grat
ed bread crumbs. Repeat roll
ing process in butter and
crumbs. Place potatoes in bak
ing dish and bake in 375 de
gree oven until cooked, about
50 minutes. Serve at once.
Serves 6.
CREAMY POTATO SOUP—
Chop 1 large onion and cook
in large pan in 2 tablespoons
butter or margarine until tend
er. Add 6 cups milk and 1
tablespoon salt, and heat just
to boiling. Remove from heat.
Stir in 1-112 cups dry instant
mashed potato flakes. Serve
hot. Makes about 6 servings, 1
cup each.
What to Wear on
An Autumn Trip
Herb Beck, veteran travel
editor and writer, makes this
interesting comment:-
“Dress comfortably and tra
vel light, but don’t forget that
autumn weather can change
on short notice. And don’t for
get to take along an extra pair
of well broken-in shoes. Be
sure to wear your seat belts
at all times in the car.
As for your car, before
starting out, see that your
tires have plenty of good wear
left, and the same goes for
your brakes.
Among the most important
items of wear are the wind
shield wipers. No matter
whether the wiper mechanism
still works like a metronome,
if the blades streak you can’t
trust them. Have them refilled
or replaced.
Don’t wear signs or doodads
or swinging knickknacks in
the windows of your car. Keep
your visibility as clear as the
clear blue sky.
Take along a raincoat or a
topcoat that you can wear
when needed away from home.

FOOD COSTS
Consumers can still save
money at the food store, says
Miss Lora Laine, home econo

ings at today’s supermarket
lie with basic foods, the staple
items, rather than the packag
