Banks Are Major
Credit Source to
Georgia Farmers
Georgia banks remain a ma
jor source of credit and other
financial services to farmers in
the state, according to J. A.
McDuffie, executive vice pres
ident, Peoples Bank, Black
shear, who represents the
Georgia Bankers Association
as Pierce County Committee
man. During 1967, the banks
maintained their leadership in
agricultural credit services.
Based on the 27th annual
farm lending summary of the
Agricultural Committee of The
American Bankers Associa
tion, Mr. McDuffie reported
that at the beginning of the
year, Georgia banks were help
ing farmers with $212 million
in loans, 11 per cent more than
a year previous. This total in
cluded SB4 million in produc
tion loans and $l2B million in
farm mortgages. At the same
time, SSB million in farm loans
was held by life insurance
companies; $162 million by the
Federal Land Banks; SIOO mil
lion by Production Credit As
sociations; and sl7 million in
nonreal estate loans, plus sll
million in real estate loans by
the Farmers Home Administra
tion. About 45 per cent of the
production credit extended by
lending institutions to Geor
gia farmers came from banks.

Overloaded Wiring
Can Cause Fires
The variety of electrical ap
pliances in the average house
hold today makes it impera
tive that one should be extra
careful not to overload wiring
at home.
Overloading wiring can
cause a fire that could be dis
astrous to your family, the
American Insurance Associa
tion warns.
Improper use of electricity
is among the prime causes of
fires — sparking one out of
every five that break out an
nually in the United States,
according to the Association.

Make certain that the elec

If in doubt, have the wiring

TOO MUCH WATER
It is a well-known fact that
recently planted shrubs need
moisture in order to survive
during the first growing sea
son. However, according to
Cooperative Extension Service
horticulturists at the Univer
sity of Georgia, excessive soil
moisture is a reason for poor
growth or death of these same
plants.

Play It Safe—
Use Seat Belts
Traffic accidents are respon
sible for 50,000 deaths a year.
This great toll makes it im
perative that everyone be traf
fic safety-conscious.
The wise motorist knows
that the seat belt represents
the best available equipment
in reducing critical or fatal
injuries, according to the A
merican Insurance Association.
All occupants of a vehicle
should wear seat belts — at
all times. It is a fact that
over half of the accidents
causing injury or death occur

per hour, and that three out of
four traffic deaths occur with

It has been estimated that
if all motorists used seat belts,
more than 5,000 lives would

the Association said.
