Board Accepting
Applications for
Service Academies
Washington, D. C. — Con
gressman W. S. (Bill) Stuckey,
Jr., has announced that the
Bth District Academy Selection
Board is still accepting ap
plications for all young men
who are interested in attend
ing one of the Service Aca
demies in 1969.
The Bth District Acaremy
Selection Board which is head
ed by Dr. Albert Woodard as
chairman was established by
Congressman Stuckey last
year in order to give interes
ted young men the opportunity
for nomination on the basis
of their qualifications.
Traditionally, members of
Congress have nominated
young men to apply for ap
pointments at the Military
Academies, and throughout the
years different Congressmen
have used various methods of
election. However, the most
common .method has been for
a Congressman to nominate
friends of the family, relatives
or sons of political supporters.
“In light of the limited num
ber of vacancies which are
granted to each member of
Congress, and the vast number
of young men who are eager
to receive appointments to our
military academies, I believe
that it is only fair that these
young men be selected on the
basis of their abilities,” Con
gressman Stuckey said when
he established the Selection
Board.
“There are too many quali
fied young men competing for
positions for a member of
Congress to be playing favor
ites. I prefer to have these
young people chosen on the
basis of their abilities and by
an unbiased body, capable of
judging their qualifications,”
Said Stuckey.
Applications may be sent
directly to Dr. Albert Wood
ard, Chairman, Bth District
Academy Selection Board,
Route One, Waycross, or they
may be sent to Congressman
Stuckey in his Washington of
fice, and he will forward them
to the Selection Board.
Representative Stuckey ur
ges any young man who has
not already applied to send
his application by December 6,
1968, in order that screening
may begin.
"The academies of our coun
try are the training ground of
our top military officials,
many of whom go to high
leadership positions in our
foreign policy decisions.
Young men who are accepted
into the academies must be
outstanding in their academic
studies, and must be physically
fit,” says Stuckey. “It is an
honor to the student and a
credit to his home state, con
gressional district and com
munity when he is selected by
one of the academies.”
