possibility of additional cash
being added for several events
before race time.
The Daytona 500, the world’s
fastest 500-mile automobile
race of any type which cli

and the combined qualifying
races and two 125-mile Grand
Nationals already list posted

The two 125-mile races, len
gthened to that distance from
100 miles but rained out
completely in 19P8, have
been moved up to Thursday,
February 20, allowing two
days for the late model stock
cars to get ready for the 500-
mile grind on Sunday. These
provide $lB 600 of the total
purse and will decide the Day
tona 500 starting positions
from third place through 40th.
The two pole positions for
the 125-mile races and the
Daytona 500 are determ’ned in
qualifying runs Sunday, Feb

for their qualifying times.
One of the highlights of the
1969 Daytona 500 will be Ric
hard Petty’s first appearance
here in a Ford. Petty’s change
from a Plymouth to a Ford
will definitely strengthen
Ford’s overall challenge with
David Pearson of Spartanburg.
S. C., the 1968 Grand National
champion, and Donnie Allison
of Huevtown, Ala., as likely
other Ford chauffeurs. Cale
Yarborough will likely be
joined in the Mercury ranks
bv Lee Roy Yarbrough of
Columbis, S. C.
Petty has twice won the
Davtona 500, first in 1964
with an average speed of 154.-
334 miles per hour for the en
tire distance, and again in 19-
60 when the race was cut
short two laps — five miles —
by rain with Petty buzzing to
a new record of 160.627 miles
per hour in a Plymouth.
Cale Yarborough holds the
track record for 400 miles with
an average speed of 166.604
miles per hour in his Mercury
during the running of the 19-
68 Daytona Firecracker 400

Carol Singing
Still a Popular
Christmas Custom

Caroling is the custom in
many countries throughout the
world. And, there are about
as many different customs con
nected with it as there are
countries.
Bagpipe music accompanies
the carolers in (no, not Scot
land) Italy!
In England the carolers re
ceive gifts for their efforts.
“Gifts” of refreshments are of
ten the case in America.
“Star-singers” is the name
for groups of carolers in many
nations. The term is taken
from the pole they carry,
which has a lighted star on
top.
The one thing that has the
greatest effect on the kind of

tion, according to Robert L.
Miles, agronomist with the
University of Georgia Coop

Country's Freedom:
Christmas Gift, Too
The foundation for the pre

celebrate such Christian beliefs
as Christmas — this was the
gift to our country on that
very day in December 1776.
It happened when George
Washington and his men won
the battle at Trenton, Pa. That
was the beginning of a long
line of victories that eventu
ally led to ultimate victory
and total independence.
