Jones Drug Company The Rexall Store 147 West Cherry Street 'Adeste Fidelis' Translated into 10 Languages “Adeste Fidelis” (O Come, All Ye Faithful) is one of the best-known Christmas carols in the world. It has been translated into more than 120 languages and dialects. Some scholars believe it may have been known to Francis of Assisi and that it might have been sung while the people ga thered around the first creches. Still others say that the great carol was written by St. Bonaventure, a contemporary of St. Francis, in the 13th cen tury. Be that as it may, it is af firmed that the carol changed through the years, and was popular in Germany and France as early as the 17th centuries. The earliest recorded words and melody of “Adeste Fidelis” are found in “Cantus Diversi”, a collection of hymns (1750) by John Francis Wade. The carols, hymns and songs that so enrich our Christmas season today are the products of many countries and many centuries. This beautiful music came to America with the early set tlers. The Germans brought Lu ther’s hymn for children, “A way In A Manger.” “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” came from England. The French eave us “Cantioue de Noel” or “O, Holy Night.” American composers began early to fill the roster of Christmas favorites. In 1730, Charles Wesley, vounger brother of John Wes ley, founder of the Methodist denomination, wrote “Hark, the Herald Angels Sine.” “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear’ was composed in 1849 by Edmund H. Sears. Oldest Christian Church Looks Like a Fortress The oldest church in Chris tianity is reputed to be the Church of the Nativity, built upon the spot where the stable stood. It was erected by Em peror Constantine the Great, in 330 A. D. The church looks like a for tess. Its orginal stately portal has been walled up and re placed by a low and narrow entrance. There was a rea son for this. In the first place it compels the many pilgrim o s o bow before they enter. In the second place it was de signed to keep the infidek from riding in on horseback or camel.
