What will be the fashion
this spring? According to Miss

Producing them for profit is

Animal Rabies Declines
31 Percent in Georgia
Confirmed rabies cases in
animals were down 31 per cent
last year in Georgia as compar
ed to 1967 according to a re
port release today by the
State Health Department.
The Department’s rabies lab
oratories in Georgia confirmed
83 positive rabid animals lapt
year. In 1967, the report shows
112 cases were confirmed.
Last year, as for the past
six years, the raccoon contin
ued to be the species most in
volved with rabies. Out of the
83 cases, raccoons accounted
for 59 with a majority of those
found in middle Georgia just
north of the Ocmulgee river.
Laurens county led the rac
coon tally with 10, closely fol
lowed by Bleckley and Dooly
counties with eight each and
Dougherty county with six.
Dr. David Dreesen, the De
partment’s chief veterinarian,
said that rabies in raccoons in
the past has been confined to
the area comprising the south
ern third of the state. Last
year’s cases indicated that ra
bies among raccoons is now
moving toward the northern
half of the state.
“This movement,” Dr. Dree
sen said, “is following our an
nual prediction that the disease
in raccoons will slowly
move northward each year.
There does not seem to be any
justification in changing that

Commercial electric lighting.
Electricity sells under the stars for Capital
Cadillac in Atlanta.
“We wanted the closest thing possible to
daylight,” says Capital’s sales manager.
“And our new outdoor lighting system gives
it to us. It stimulates sales after dark.
And provides a good deal of security.
“We used to garage our automobiles when
we closed at night. Now they can be left
on the lot for people to inspect at will.
And perhaps buy the next day.”
If you’d like a star salesman who will work
from dusk to dawn without vacations,
commissions or coffee breaks, call a Georgia
Power Company commercial representative.
He’ll help you make connections with a
lighting system that will deliver more
than its quota of selling power.
prediction this year.”
He explained that rabies in
a raccoon population follows
river basins in spreading from
one to another. “The raccoon’s
habitat is in river areas,” he
said, “and rabies spreads rap
idly through susceptible rac
coon populations in areas that
have previously been free of
the disease. It will strike hard
in an area then move on to the
next one.”
Dr. Dreesen added that six
rabid raccoons have already
been confirmed through Jan
uary of this year. Two
were found in Laurens county
and one each in Bleckley,
Mitchell, Calhoun and Dough
erty counties. These were
the only rabid animals report
ed through the end of January.
A significant decrease in fox
and bat rabies was noted for
last year. There were five fox
cases in 1968 as compared to
13 in 1967. Last year, two rab
id foxes were found in Tel
fair county and one each in
Wheeler, Ware and Mitchell
counties.
