WE ARE HELPING . . . ARE YOUI
Each year, Georgia Electric Membership Corpora
tions, owned by those they serve, invest in new and
expanding facilities to meet the increasing demands
For electric power by their almost 400,000 farm, resi
dential, and business consumers. They maintain almost
75,000 miles of distribution lines, serving about 25
percent of the state's population.
Statistics show that for each dollar we invest in
new or improved service, our electric consumers spend
four dollars or more on appliances, electrical equip-
ment, and services.
By providing a dependable supply of low-cost
electric power for modern living and farming, we help
make new business and industry possible in many
rural areas, providing new jobs and new payrolls.
Our only mission is service. We believe that help
ing make our areas grow economically stronger is a
service which benefits ALL Georgians!

Landscape
Planning
By Mary Lee Boatright
There is widespread inter
est in community landscape
projects in Georgia
Physical appearance can be
a great asset to a city or town.
Communities that are visually
clean have a far greater chance
of attracting new industries,
tourist trade and new families.
A city or community must
first recognize the need for
improvements, then make ne
cessary plans for development.
Community action is reguir
ed for landscape improvements
on private proerty. Any goals
for the community should be
well thought out to give max
imum benefits to the greater
number of people.
Areas selected to be devel
oped should be designed to
have an overall relationship.
They should not be individual
ly planned so that each will
have an entirely different
character. This lack of unity
can happen if several differ
ent organizations or clubs
work without a master or
overall plan in mind.
Using the same street tree
planting over the entire com
munity or using a certain
shrub or tree on individual
home grounds throughout the
area are examples of what can
be done to create harmonious
street fronts and unify the de
velopment. A similar treat
ment of parks and public
grounds would give the same
effect.
Good landscape
should be stressed

GARDENING TIP
When those azaleas finish
flowering, give them an ap
plication of fertilizer. Gerald
E. Smith, horticulturist with
the University of Georgia Co
operative Extension Service,
says another application of
fertilizer should be applied
about, two .months after the
post flowering application.

RUST ON PINES
What can you do about
fusiform rust on your pine
trees? Dr. Wiley N. Garrett,
plant pathologist with the Co
operative Extension Service,
says remove the small cank
ered limbs to prevent the dis
ease from spreading to the
main trunk. You may have
to replace small pines that
have cankers on the main
trunk.
