Our Singing
Master and His
Singing School
Have you ever had the joy
of going to a school and sing
ing all day long? What a hap
py place for a child or an
older person to be; I had this
joy during my childhood.
Our Singing Master was
Martin Dowling of the High
Bluff Primitive Baptist Com
munity near Schelattersville
Station on B & W Railroad,
some 10 miles East of Way
cross in Ware County, Ga.
His church day was the
second Sunday in each month
and the Saturday before. Our
church days were at Smyrna
Primitive Baptist, the first
Sunday in each month and
Saturday before, and at Oak
Grove Primitive Baptist
Church, the fourth Sunday in
each month and Saturday be
fore. So the only time left for
him to teach in our community
was the Saturday before the
third Sunday in each month.
He would come and organize
the singing school of ten stu
dents; each Saturday before the
third Sunday in each month.
He would not teach less than
twenty-five and no more than
thirty. He would make up his
roll and collect one dollar each
and take our order for the
music books, “The Sacred
Harp” and “Four Sharpe
Notes.” We woud pay the price
for them and he would order
them to come and be delivered
to us the next Saturday be
fore the third Sunday. He
would always give the third
Sunday gratis for all the
countyside to come out and
join in and sing for sheer joy.
MEMORIES OF
LONG AGO
By Mrs. L. P. Puckett
In The Jesup Sentinel
They would bring their din
ner and stay all day long
from 10:00 A. M. till 4:00 P
M. We had our lessons assign
ed to us on Saturday, one
month before. Here we learn
ed the shape and the length
of the notes and when to rest,
etc. We learned how to keep
beat and also walk in time.
He selected us according to
the make up of our voices, so
we were separated into
groups accordingly; Soprano,
Bass, Alto, and treble. Our
notes were only four: Fa - So -
Sol - Mi. Most of our voices
usually fell into soprano
groups. But the most difficult
section to develop seemed to
be the treble. Anyone with
that type of voice was much
sought after at Singing School,
church, and community sings.
These sings were held in the
public school buildings. First
at one end of the community
then at the other. Our first
one was at Green Head School

then at Strickland School.
When Willis School, Green
Head School, and Cross Swamp
School consolidated into Ray
lon School (the first plank
school of the community) our
sings would be held in the
Rayion School house.
Our singing master was fed
and lodged for two days each I
month, as well as his horse!
being stabled, watered and fed,
and with whomever he wanted I
to spend the night.
It was understood that this
would be an evening sing held
at that house with the school
master leading the singing.
Friends and neighbors would
come from far and near. The
gay young swains would come
escorting the beautiful young
belle girls of the neighbor
hood; walking and talking,
laughing and singing. What
could be happier than to hear
these gay young voices with
joy, hope and gladness in ev
ery inch of their being after
a hard week’s work.
Those that lived farther a
way would come in buggies,
surreys, carts and wagons. All
of the song books would be
brought forth and the singing
would begin and would last
until late in the evening. Then
the lady of the house, assisted
by her lovely daughters, and
maybe her closest neighbor^
and her daughters, would
bring out the cakes, pies, cook
ies, coffee, milk, and butter-
