Dean May Seek
Disaster Aid
For Leaf Area
State Senator Roscoe Dean
Jr. of Jesup says he will ask
Sen. Herman Talmadge to
“stand by’’ in the event the
recent rain and hail damage
to South Georgia tobacco crops
points toward declaring the
section a disaster area.
Sen. Talmadge is a member
of the Senate Agriculture Com
mittee and Sen. Dean is chair
man of the Senate Sub-Com
mittee on Tobacco, of the
Georgia State Senate.
“It is my understanding,”
Dean said, “that many of our
farmers have lost their entire
tobacco crop and loses to
others have been heavy. The
farmer cannot stand to lose the
time, effort and money he has
invested and he certainly can
| not let the market open and
close without realizing the
i money that he had anticipated
i for supporting his family and
■ maintaining his farm.”
Dean said he sent a tele
| gram to Talmadge requesting
that he “do everything in his
. power to see that Georgia to
| bacco growers get Farm and
Home Administration funds or
other available federal funds
for such purposes wherever
the farmer has suffered a siz
able crop loss to the recent
rain and hail.”
Robert Miles, Extension
Service Agronomist on Tobac
co at Tifton, stated that the
loss will run as high as 50
per cent of the crop for many
farmers.
Miles added: “The counties
from Ware eastward and to
wards Evans County suffered
most from the hail and rain,
while the western side of the
belt from Tift County south
ward was not to badly af
fected.
“The tobacco quota for Geor
gia this year is between 125
and 126 million pounds and
we will be extremely fortunate |
if we grow as high as a mil-1
lion pounds,’” Miles said.
