Annual Report
Shows Progress

Ray Shirley, Commission di
rector, cited the Rural Fire
Defense Program for giving
communities, not protected by
organized fire departments, an
opportunity to provide fire
suppression service, and others
an opportunity to reinforce
present equipment. During the
program s initial year, 103
' pieces of fire equipment were
I placed in 94 communities in
60 counties.
In the field of reforestation

pine tree seedlings ,were made
available to the general pub
lic. Shirley pointed out that
this marked the fifth consec
utive year that these “super”
trees have been available to
the public. He noted that seed
were planted to produce a
nother 28 million improved
trees for the 1969-70 planting
season.
During the reporting period,
the number of forest fires de
creased 20 percent and the
forest acreage loss was de
creased 50 percent over the
1967-68 fiscal year. Shirley
emphasized that only 41.854
forest acres were burned by
wildfire of the 24,066,400 pri
vate forest acres protected.
Shirley added that the For
estry Commission provided
technical forestry assistance
to more landowners than ever
before. There were 19,616
landowners assisted. Through
the Atlanta Metro Forestry
Program, increasing service is
being rendered to homeown
ers in the six county area. This
type service has also increas
ed in all areas of the State.
Construction obligations for
the VA in 1969 amounted to
about SIOO million, including
new hospitals at Lexington, j
Ky. San Diego, Calif., and
Tampa, Fla., with a total bed
capacity of 1,901.

appointment of Stanley P.
Golaszewski, Folkston busi
ness leader as Crusade Chair
man for Region XI.
This Southeast Georgia area
includes Appling, Atkinson,
Bacon, Brantley, Camden,
Charlton. Clinch, Coffee.
Glynn, .T»ff Davis L’b-'-tv
Long, Mclntosh, Pierce, Ware
and Wayne Counties.
In accepting this responsi
ble position, Mr. Golaszewski
said, “We must inform all
citizens of South Georgia of
personal ways of protectme
themselves against cancer. In
the past 8 years 2 278 ner
sons have died of this dread
disease in our 16 county a
rea.”
Through each county orga
nization approximately 6,000
volunteers will raise S7B 000
of the state goal of $1,440 000

First National Bank of Folk
ston in March 1967 where h~
is now Vice-President. He
is a member of the Board of
Governors of the American
Banking Institute and chair
man of the Forum and Semi
nar Committee. He is chairman
of the Registration Committee
of the National Assoiation
Bank Auditors and Comptrol
lers. An active volunteer for
the American Cancer Society
for several years, he was a
warded a special citation by
the Georgia Division last year
for attaining 118% of the cru
sade goal for Charlton Coun
ty. He will afiain lead the U
nit crusade in Folkston and
Charlton County this year in
addition to his work on a
Regional level.
Along with other state lead
°rs. last week he attended the
National Crusade Kick-Off
where Fess Parker, familiar
to millions as the hero of
Daniel Boone and other ad
venture films, began the 1970
Crusade to Control Cancer.
Mr. Golaszewski and Mr.
McCook will announce the
chairman of the 1970 Crusade
for all counties in this Region
within the next two weeks.

on January 19 for adults in
this area who have not re
ceived their high school di
plomas.
Day and evening classes are
being organized, the day
classes to meet at the above
address from 8:45 until 11:-

6:50 to 10:00 P. M. twice week

grades one through eight, and
for those who have not com
pleted all high school require
ments.
The registration on January
