CBS Picks Valdosta State as
Site for Televising Eclipse
Columbia Broadcasting Sys
tem has selected the Valdosta
State College campus as a
major domestic remote loca

7 solar eclipse and people
watching the eclipse. The an
nouncement was made by Ber
ry Jagoda; associate producer
of special events, CBS News,
New York, and confirmed by
VSC President S. Walter Mar
tin.
Mr. Jagoda has been assign
ed as producer for the seg
ment of the show which will
come live and in color from
Valdosta State College.
CBS is still considering sites
in Nova Scotia, Mexico, Nor
folk and Wallops Island, Va.,
with Valdosta to be one of the
major remote telecast sites.
The eclipse will occur on
March 7, beginning at 11 A.
M. Central Standard Time in
Mexico, and reaching Valdos

“We had a hard time de
ciding what is the best place
to watch the eclipse and watch
people watching the eclipse,”
said Producer Jagoda.
He will arrive in Valdosta
for advance planning the lat
ter part of this week, and at
the end of the month will re
turn with a major staff of
25 to 35 CBS people from New
York. Jagoda and Robert Wus
sler, director for special e
vents for CBS News, were in
Valdosta in late January to
look over the city and sever
al designated observation sites
here.
Among the sites set apart
for eclipse viewers are Val
dosta State College Main Cam
pus, North Campus, student
parking lot and baseball park,
the Valdosta Junior High
School track, Lowndes High
School campus, and the Azel
ea City Industrial Park.
Dr. Raymond Hunter, chair
man of the Valdosta State
College Physics Department,
is coordinating observation
plans in Valdosta, and has
made arrangements for the
several locations. He has been
working very closely with
representatives of the Val
dosta Lowndes County Cham
ber of Commerce in the plan
ing for serious observers of
the eclipse who are expected
to number several thousand.
According to Mr. Jagoda, a
segment of the CBS eclipse
show will be coming directly
from the front lawn of the
Valdosta State College. This
CBS program will be carried
live and in color to the Unit
ed State, Mexico, South A
merica, Canada, and Europe. It
will be shown by delayed sa
tellite that evening in Japan
and Australia.
The 20.000 member Astro
nomical League named Val
dosta its prime viewing site
in November, after a visit by
Russell Maag of St. Louis, Mo.,
national coordinator of Solar
Eclipse Observation.
News on the eclipse and
the network’s live special is
to be on the CBS Evening
News before March 7, and ani
mation on the eclipse has been
prepared by network artists.
An estimated 60 million peo
ple will be on the path of
the March 7 eclipse, and the
next one of this magnitude is
to be in 2186. said Maag, “and
this is sort of unprecedented.’’
Amateur astronomers are
particularly interested in pho
tographing solar coronal
streamer and coronal
motion, said Maag. The corona,
in laymen’s language is when
the moon is directly between
the earth and the sun. No one
has ever photographed motion
in the solar corona before, he
said, though astronomers are
confident motion is there.
The sun is to be at its high
est point, 60 degrees, when
the eclipse reaches Valdosta,
and this is another advant
age, he said. “You are for
tunate to be the area on the
whole eclipse where the sun
will be at its highest,” and
this means less structural and
atmospheric obstruction, Maag
explained.

LITTLE CHANGE
IN FARM PICTURE
Agriculture in the 1970’s will
be in much the same posi
tion it was in during the dec
ade of the 60’s, says an out
look and market analysis spec
ialist with the Cooperative
Extension Service.
This is true even with the
predicted changes through
the next decade, adds Thcmas
B. Walkup, University of
Georgia.
Os course, he continues, we
can expect new
innovations and tech
nology to continue increas
ing efficiency and production.
“But the producer will con
tinue to be in his familiar po
sition of facing rising produc
tion cost without much in
crease in prices.”
Walkup says the thought of
farmers being elevated from
this position through major
changes in policy, price struc
ture and marketing system
seems fairly remote. “It would
be incorrect to predict that the
farmer will emerge from price
cost pessures into a situation
of great prosperity in the next
decade.
“However,” he adds, “ as
we progress as a nation the
farm producer will benefit al
so, but to a lesser extent than
other sectors of our economy.”
The Extension outlook and
market analysis specialist adds,
however, that “changes could
be quite significant in 1971.”
