My Mother
My Mother, Lu Cinda
Morgan will be 78 years young
on May 24 of this year. On
May 23 I will be 45 years old.
Now some people may say, so
what, who are they? Well
this is what I would like to
tell you. I may not have the
words that a better educated
person .may use but the main
thing I want to do is pay tri
bute to my mother and really
let her know what she means
to me while she is living.
My Mother has been a tow
er of strength that a lot of
people would have fallen un
der many, many times. The
presidents have had the
weight of the world on their
shoulders but I think that my
mother has had much more.
She gave up a daughter when
she was only 29. Three years
later she gave up a son in Eng
land, where he is now buried.
She sent four sons to service,
three returned and one stay
ed. A few years later she lost
her husband and father in a
period of three weeks. In 1966
she lost a daughter, daughter
in-law and son in 8 months
time, in 1969 she under went
a serious operation at the age
of 77 years young. Her home
is a gathering place for all her
friends and relatives for she
has a heart bigger than the
city she lives in. If any one
needs a place to go or a dol
lar they always say Aunt Cin
dy will stand by. She has al
ways given of herself when
ever she was needed. I’.m sure
when she is gone she will be
greatly missed by everyone
who ever knew her, many
will look back and say she
was a good old soul. Why
don’t these same people say to
themselves about Aunt Cindy,
I'm going to send her flowers
on Mother’s Day while she
can still enjoy them. The sim
ple words in this tribute is to
wake up people, let your
friends, loved ones know to
day you love them. Don’t
wait until they are gone and
can’t see the flowers, or hear

The Neighborhood Youth Corps
to Begin 10 Week Program June 8
High school students in
Brantley and area counties, 14
years old and older, who are
unemployed and members of
low income families can now
apply for part-time jobs this
summer.
The Neighborhood Youth
Corps program, sponsored by
Slash Pine Community Action
Agency, has job opportunities
for 500 such youths for 10
weeks beginning June 8.
Mershon Aspinwall, Jr., area
NYC director, said today a
Department of Labor summer
NYC grant for $198,980 re
ceived Regional office approv
al this week.
He pointed out that while
500 is the same number serv
ed the past two summers, this
year’s program will be a two
part undertaking.
Three hundred fifty youths
will work 24 hours per week
as in the past. An additional
150 youths who have academ
ic need for summer school
may participate in the new
work-study phase of sum
mer NYC. The youths will be
paid for 10 hours of summer
school attendance and 16
hours of work for a total pay
ment of 26 hours per week
during the 8 week summer
school period.
Wages for all youths will be
at the rate of $1.45 per hour,
Aspinwall said.
The academic need is re
stricted to those students hav
ing failed a subject not made
up in the past, failed a sub
ject during the 1969-70 term,
or other circumstances which
would keep the student from
graduating with his class.
Certification of this need
will be provided by the school
guidance counselor.
Summer schools will be op
erated at Waycross High
School and Fitzgerald High
School. Students in other a
rea school systems may enroll
in these schools. Tuition ex
penses or transportation cost
will not be provided by NYC.
High school students in the
counties of Atkinson, Bacon,
Ben Hill, Brantley, Charlton,
Clinch, Coffee, Pierce, and
Ware wanting to take advan
tage of one of the two pro
grams offered this summer
should get an application
from the teacher in their
school who coordinates NYC
activities there.
“The teachers are attempt
ing to get these applications
back by May 14 and it is im
portant that a contact with
this teacher be made. This
should also be done by stu
dents who are uncertain about
passing a certain subject and
therefore cannot know now
whether or not summer school
attendance will be necessary,”
Aspinwall said.
Slash Pine CAA also spon
sors two other NYC programs.
The current in-school pro
gram continues operation un
til May 30 and will then be
resumed in the fall. The

The Veterans
Question and
Answer Corner
Q — I was wounded in Viet
nam, and am supposed to be
separated from service at a
military hospital. Will I re
ceive counseling or informa
tion about veteran’s benefits
before separation?
A— Yes. A VA contact rep
resentative will visit you at
the hospital to advise and as
sist you in filing applications
for benefits.
q — When I am discharged,
I plan to start a small busi
ness in my home town. May I
use the G. I. Bill for this pur
pose?
A— No. Business loans are
available only to eligible
World War II and Korean
veterans, and not authorized
under the new G. I. Bill. Try
the Small Business Adminis
tration.
Q — Can the Veterans Ad
ministration pay burial allow
ances for former members of
the defunct Women’s Army
Auxiliary Corps?
A— Yes. Contact your
nearest VA office.
Q — Presently, I receive a
VA pension under the “old
law.” Could I change from the
“old law” to the “new law”
and then back to the “old Jaw”
later?
A— No, once you change
from the “old law” to the “new
law,” you cannot later change
back to the “old law.” How
ever, the VA will help you de
termine whether it is to your
advantage to be under the
“old law” or the “new law.”
Q — I am 65 years old and
plan to retire soon. Can I con
vert my present National Ser
vice Life Insurance policy to
the New Modified Life Plan?
A— No. The Modified Life
Plan insurance is not availa
ble once the insured is six
months past his 60th birthday.

New Bulletins
Feature Tomatoes
And Cantaloupes
The latest recommended
production and cultural prac
tices for growing cantaloupes
and tomatoes are the topics of
two publications announced
this week by the University
of Georgia Cooperative Exten
sion Servnce.
Entitled “Growing Canta
loupes” and “Tomato Produc
tion,” the publications were
written by James M. Barber
and Donald A. Hegwood, Ex
tension horticulturists. Popu
larity of cantaloupes and to
matoes have made these pro
fitable crops for Georgia’s
commercial farmers who grow
and market quality varities,
the Extension horticulturists
said.
The publications include
recommendations on varieties,
fertilization, soils, transplant
production, land preparation,
cultivation, weed control, ir
rigation, disease and insect
control and harvesting.
Both crops can be grown
in almost any section of the
state. However, commercial
production is concentrated
largely in the Coastal Plains
for cantaloupes and several
Southcentral Georgia coun
ties for tomatoes.
Copies of these and other
publications about agriculture,
home economics and 4-H
Club work are available at lo
cal county Extension Service
offices.

STAIN IDEA
You can make your own
wood stain. Home economists
with the University of Geor

Service say cut a plug of to
bacco into small pieces.
Place the pieces in a quart
jar and add one pint of clear
household ammonia. Cover
with a lid and let soak at
least one week. Apply the
stain to wood with a lintless
cloth.

Demand Boosts
Soybeans Sales
American soybean producers
are selling record quantities
of soybeans both at home and
abroad this year, according to
Ross P. Bowen, Chairman of
the Georgia State Agricultural
Stabilization and Conserva
tion (ASC) Committee.
It is estimated that soybeans
utilization will increase from
945 million bushels used in
1969 to 1,136 million bushels
for this year. This increase in
market demand for soybeans
represents the production from
about 7 million acres.
“In view of the excess pro
duction capacity we have in
this country, this growth in
soybean demand is welcome
news to soybean producers
and taxpayers,” Chairman Bo
wen commented.
During the period 1966
through 1968 and part of 19-
69, soybean supplies tended
to increase as a result of in
creased competition from low
er-priced imports of fish meal,
sunflower oils and other com
petitive protein substitutes.
However, in recent months
demand for soybeans has in
creased substantially as a
result of more competitive
pricing, a drop-off in supplies
of other high-protein materials,
and continued growth in world
demand for protein feeds.
As a result of the increased
demand at higher prices, soy
bean producers who placed
their crop under loan last
fall have been redeeming
them prior to the loan maturi
ty date and moving them into
the open market, the Chair
man pointed out.
In past years, with less fa
vorable markets, farms have
tended to leave their beans un
der loan until the loan maturity
date. Reversal of this trend
will result in a substantial sav
ing to the Government and
therefore to taxpayers.
“Increased exports have
been, and will continue to be,
the key to large growth mar
kets for soybeans,” Mr. Bo
wen pointed out.
“Soybeans supply more than
four pounds of meal for each
pound of oil, while most other
vegetable oil products supply
about a pound of oil for each
pound of meal. The demand
for meal is increasingly fast
er than the demand for oil,
and this in turn creates a
demand for soybeans both in
the U. S. and abroad,” he ex
plained.
With soybeans priced more
competitively with other high
protein products, overall mar
ket demand has increased fast
er than processing facilities
could profitably be develop
ed.
However, with a somewhat

improved operating margin,
more crushing plants are be
ing built or planned. “This will
increase the demand for farm
ers’ beans and eventually pro
vide a greater volume of soy
bean oil and meal at more
competitive prices,” the Chair
man emphasized.
Recent action which result
ed in a 50 per cent reduction
in the soybean levy into Ja
pan, and continued efforts by
USDA to discourage an im
port tax on soybean oil and
meal moving into the Euro
pean economic community, has
helped exports.
This action, combined with
a continued desire by con
sumers to upgrade their diets,
will assist in developing a
market for additional supplies
of beans.
In anticipation of this im
proved market demand, soy
bean growers have reported
intentions to plant over 43 mil
lion acres in 1970, an increase
of almost 1 million acres above
1969.
“This increase should boost
bean growers’ incomes around
SIOO million next year,” the
Chairman estimated.
