A PUPPY FOR A BOY
(AND HIS DADDY)
Warren is eight years old
Saturday. Now. there are a
lot of things a boy of that age
could ask for, for a birthday
present. And believe me, being
his daddy, I know all of them.
His list meandered endlessly
through race car tracks and
baseball and football equip
ment. and all sorts of related
items. He already has a fish
ing outfit and a BB gun, and
he doesn’t know it yet, but
when he’s old enough, there’s
a 20 gauge single shot hidden
a closet waiting for him.
The thing he wanted most,
however, was a pet. He wanted
a dog, but a few weeks ago,
he’d have settled for a kitten,
when a neighbor offered him
one. It sort of hurt .me to tell
him no, but it didn’t seem
wise to get a female kitten.
And besides, ol’Dad was sort of
holding out for the dog, think
ing it would be a better pet
for a boy in the first place, and

in the second place, well ... I’d
been planning for sometime to
get a Brittany Spaniel.
You see, in the city, a poin
ter or setter is a little difficult
to keep. I needed a bird dog
badly, but there didn’t seem
much of away to get one, un
less I could get a Brittany,
which would not only be a
good hunting dog, but a good
net. With the limited oppor
tunities of a city dweller to
find bird hunting, it appeared
likely that the dog would
spend the majority of its time
as a pet. But perhaps, the
right dog could help the Old
Man find a covey now and a
gain.
Well, the search began. Find
ing Brittanies isn’t always ea
sy, and price tags are high. At
last, however, a young fellow
was found in Athens, with a
litter of eight-week-old regis
tered Brittanies, and the price
was right. He had one male
and four females left. It was
the male we were after.
This writer, however, seems
to have a soft spot for pretty
females, four-legged or other
wise. And there was this beau
tiful female, that stole the
hearts of the entire family, be
fore the male got a good going
over. She’s now residing at
our house, as of last night, and
there is a very happy eight
year old boy. Also, there’s a
happy five year old girl; a
proud and happy mother, who
made the purchase possible by
approving the female, and th°
transaction as a whole; and,
we might as well add, a very
pleased and proud daddy.
Now. life will probably be
quite different around the
Wohlgemuth household with
the new addition. In fact, the
pup’s first night reminded me
of the first night after bring
ing a new baby home from the
hospital. There were .many
trips to the pup’s bed to try to
quell its fears and whinings. It
was a sleepy father that pull
ed into work late this morn
ing.
It’s worth it all, just to hear
the happy laughter and see the
shiny faces of two youngsters.
And by the time the boy is
ready for his 20 gauge, the
pup should —if dad is good
enough at training—be ready
to point his first covey rise.
That’s the day ol’ Dad is liv
ing for!
