Women account for 65 per
cent of the total labor force in
crease from 1940 to 1968, and
their representation in the
work force has risen from one
fourth to almost two-fifths of
all workers. Looking ahead to
1975, the greatest employment
opportunities for women are
expected to be in the profes

Some of our forefathers
recognized that future gener
ations would still need forest
products, but few dreamed of
the tremendous drain and
and many uses of our growing
economy would place on the
timberlands. A logger sees the
forest as a source of jobs; a
banker may look upon timber
lands in terms of invest
ment; a fisherman thinks of
angling in a clear forest
stream; a water engineer ap
praises forests for the part
they play in flood control. For
ests have all these values and
many .more.
Every citizen should be con
cerned about our forests. He
is the ultimate user of the
poles, lumber, and many oth
er products of the forest. The
paper bag that you transport
your groceries home in is a
product of the forest. Trees
furnish materials for this pa
per, and resin, a naval stores
product, is used for sizing the
paper. Trees are manufactured
into rayon ... a part of the
clothes you wear.
The saplings of today are
the pulpwood bolts, sawlogs,
or poles and pilings of tomor
row. Doing something to pro
tect and improve our forests
is more important than mourn
ing over what the -past has
done to reduce them to their
present state.
Most of the timber owners
in this county should be con
cerned about better naval
stores practices or better and
more conservative methods of
producing gum naval stores.
The better the owner uses his
timber for the production of
gum, the greater will be his in
come and the better the tim
ber he will have to sell for
other timber products.
More timber owners are rec
ognizing that naval stores can

Did you know that working
pine trees for naval stores is
one of the oldest occupations
of man-kind? The “Pitche” us
ed by Noah to waterproof his
Ark was produced by a spe
cies of conifer similar to our
pine trees today.
Making tar. or naval stores,
for treating the rigging of
sailing boats was an important
occupation of the earliest set
tlers in this country. In early
Virginia and North Carolina,
pine gum was used like money
as a medium of exchange. And,
even today in our own county,
pine trees are a valuable crop
furnishing a steady income
for many farmers and timber
owners. Turpentining is the
main occupation of many fam
ilies.
This crop is too valuable to
be depleted by wildfires or
careless cutting. It will pay to
manage your timber stands
