tlement, you must have sold
your home for a compelling
reason, and the loan must have
been paid in full.
Q - I plan to enter college
under the GI Bill, and carry
16 semester hours. How much
will VA. pay me, since I have

payments will be $175 a

this back to the government if
I am awarded VA compensa

Necrotic enteritis is an in
testinal abnormality that occ
curs occasionally in most
poultry producing areas.
There is some controversy
regarding the cause. Experi
mental efforts to reproduce the
disease have been inconsistent.
Some investigators believe that
it is another or different stage
of ulcerative enteritis. How
ever, most researchers feel that
the two are entirely different
and unrelated diseases.
The condition is most apt to
occur in 3- to 4-week old
chicks. But it may occur in old
er birds. Mortality in untreat
ed cases may run 20 percent
or more. Prompt treatment
will usually prevent mortality.
And feed conversion and grow
th rates in treated birds will
usually be near normal-
On postmortem examination,
it is not a difficult disease to
diagnose. The intestine is
thickened and distended. The
inner lining or mucosa looks
exactly like the name sounds
(Necrotic). A dirty grayish
brown, flannel towel appear
ance has been used to describe
the gut. Frequently, the crop is
enlarged and contains primari
ly a watery fluid.
Treatment, if started
promptly, is very effective.
Bacitracin in the feed or water
is probably the drug of choice.
Streptomycin and neomycin
are also effective. Water med
ication is generally recom
mended, and should be given
for five days. Reoccurrence of
the disease is not uncommon
five to ten days after treatment
has been discontinued. A
second treatment will usually
bring the disease under con
trol.
Unlike ulcerative enteritis,,
necrotic enteritis does not oc
cur in any pattern or regular
ity. It does not necessarily re
occur on the same farm. This
lack of a pattern makes it dif
ficult to plan a preventive
medication program. An a
wareness of the potential pro
blem and prompt treatment
will prevent serious losses^ _

Nahunta, Ga. — About this
time every fall we begin to
experience a “dry Monsoon”
period. Rain becomes scattered
and scarce. The grass hardly
needs cutting once a week.
The crepe myrtle trees froth
with lavish plumes of flowers.
Bees and other nectar-loving
insects, surfeited with sum
mer’s bounty, laze among the
late roses. It seems all of God’s
natural handiwork is drifting
softly into the golden hazy
period of aestivation called
Indian Summer.
Aestivation is what happens
to the leaves on normally heal- i
thy trees this time of year. It
makes people think the tree i
has been poisoned or has fall- .
en prey to some exotic blight. '
Black gum and yellow pop
lars usually begin to turn col
or just as the trees does in
fall. Yellow poplars generally
become yellow-gold, black
gums turn maroon or scarlet
gold. The effect from a dis
tance is exciting enough to in
spire fabric designers, to pro
duce Paisley prints; yet an
other instance of man copying
nature to “invent’’ something.
Aestivation is a state of ex
istence like hibernation, when
plants and animals are dor
mant, but it’s not hibernation.

It is the fall-time equivalent of
hibernation when life process
es slow because of prolonged
high temperatures. It explains
. why it seems so many squir
; rels, possums, and other ani
‘ mals cannot move with their
accustomed swiftness to avoid
cars that move with the same
high speed regardless of the
temperature. In the case of the
■ tree it is simply finished using
; that particular leaf to pro
: duce food for either nourish
। ment or storage.
The green chlorophyll dis
appears leaving the fall colors
i we normally see only when
frost reveals them. In the case
I of aestivation heat rather than
; frost is the cause of the chloro
■ phyll’s disappearance. It var
ies even in parts of the leaf it
self depending on its location
and exposure.
The thing to watch for is
that suddenly the leaves on
the same limb all don’t start
to die at once. If that happens,
likely you’re seeing a distress
signal rather than a phenome
| non and shouldn’t hesitate to
call the Forestry Commission.
