Local forest landowners and
home owners may notice
swellings caused by a rust
fungus on the limbs and trunks
of their pine trees during the
early weeks of spring.
The fusiform rust disease
has always been here, but peo
ple don’t seem to notice it
until this time of the year, no
ted H. L. Neal, Jr. of the Geor
gia Forestry Commission.
Presently there is no cure
for' the disease which is most
severe in slash and loblolly
pines, he explained.
The first evidence of the
fusiform rust is usually a
small. spindle-shaped swell
ing or canker on the stem of
a s°°dling or on the branch of
a tree.
According to Neal the dis
ease do°' not spread from pine
to pin° but must first pass
through a stage of nearby oak
species.
“We are going to have the
disease here with the large
number of oaks around,” said
Neal.
The bright orange dust on
the pine cankers are masses
of spores which produce hair
like bristles on the lower sur
face of oak leaves. Those bris
tles produce dark, windblown
spores that are capable of in
fecting other pines.
Once infection has occurred
on a stem or leaf, it does not
spread throughout the tree
but remains localized.
Branch cankers closer than
18 inches to the stem of the
tree can seriously infect the
main stem, and cankers reach
ing from three-fourths to com
pletely encircling the stem
ultimatey cause death or ser
ious weakening of the tree.

disease is the removal of oak
trees to break the rust’s life
cycle, but this is generally not
feasible.
In some cases, the branch
’ canker may be pruned, the
area scraped and painted with
an asphalt paint, explained
Neal.
Trees with severe stem
I cankers may need removing.
। “A tree with a large canker
1 located next to .a house should
be removed before a heavy
wind breaks it off,” said
i Neal.
In areas of high winds, such
as on the islands, treated
seedlings obtained from nur
series which conduct spray
programs, and longleaf pine
and other species of seedlings
that are more wind resistant
and on which the disease oc
curs less, should be used.
Neal explained that research
is being conducted to find a
cure for the disease. Experi
ments using arsenic haven’t
proven 100 percent effective.
SOUTH IS GOOD
TREE-GROWER
The South is growing new
trees faster than it is harvest
ing mature ones, reports the
Southern Forest Institute.
This year, the South’s forest
industries (nulp and paoer.
lumber, nlvwood, etc.) plant
ed or distributed more than
^65 million seedlings. The
tot'd included more than 460
million pine seedlings and al
most five million hardwoods.
Almost 60 million of the seed
lings planted this- year are ge
netically superior seedlings
which will grow taller, bigger
around, straighter and up to
25 nercent faster than ordi
nary trees.

SEED CORN SUPPLY
It now appears that there
will be enogh blight resistant
corn seed this year to plant
around 60 percent of the corn
acreage in the South.
That is the opinion of Dr.
Harold Gurley of the Georgia
Cooperative Extension Ser
vice. Gurley says that the re
maining 40 percent should be
planted only with a recom
mended second generation
seed.
Research has proven that
where second generation seed
are planted a reduction of
from ten to twenty percent
can be expected. However, it
looks like this is a limitation
with Which producers will
have to live this year.
Gurley reminds corn pro
ducers in Georgia who have
to plant second generation
seed from their last year crop
that they should use only
these varieties: Coker 71, Cok
er 67, Funks G-795-W, and
Pioneer 511-A.
If any other second genera
tion seed are planted, a yield
reduction of around 50 percent
may be expected.
More detailed information
on recommended corn seed for
1971 can be had at the county
Extension Service office in
Brantley County.
CITRUS PULP
FOR CATTLE
With the high price of corn,
the cost of Wintering cattle
may be reduced by replacing
some corn in the ration with
citrus pulp. Although citrus
pulp is a little lower in pro
tein than ground snapped
corn, it is high in energy and
also higher in digestibility
than corn. Whenever the
price of the citrus pulp per
ton is less than that of ear
corn, it may be used to re
place from 50 percent to 70
percent of the snapped corn
in supplemental feed for win
tering cattle on low quality
hay and limited grazing.

GARDENING TIME
When is the best time to
start your garden for next
year? Horticulturists with the
University of Georgia Cooper
ative Extension Service say
start this fall. Begin soil prep
aration in the fall by bedding
or ridging a portion of the gar
den area. This will help in
sure proper s r il conditions for
early spring planting.

TREE FARMS GROW WOOD
FOR EVERYONE
More than 48 million acres
of Southern woodlands are en
rolled in the nation-wide, for
est industry-sponsored Amer
ican Tree Farm System, re
ports the Southern Forest In
stitute. The land is owned by
more than 20 thousand pri
vate landowners in the 13
states of the South. Tree Farms
are a valuable source of wood
for both industrial and con
sumer needs. They provide
recreation, wildlife habitat and
soil and watershed protection
too.
SAFE FOOD
How can housewives keep
the food they serve safe to
eat? Home Economists with
University of Georgia Coop

serve it soon after cooking or
refrigerate promptly. Keep
hot foods hot and cold foods
cold. Can or freeze food un

SHOP SMART
FROM THE START
Styles change, trends change,
you change — but whatever
your specific choices at the
time, you spend more on food
i shopping than on any other
single type of expenditure. It
pays to learn to be smart a
bout shopping. In terms of
money allocation, typical U.
S. consumers spend about 22
percent of all their dollars on
food and beverages; 9 percent
on clothing, 14 percent on
housing, 6 percent on house
hold operation; 6 percent on
home furnishings, 7 percent
on automobiles, and 36 per
cent on all other expenditures.
In the next 20 years, based
on today’s prices you are like
ly to spend an average of
$7,000 on food and beverages
—for you alone; or more than
that if you shop for a family.
It pays to learn the techniques
of food shopping, relevant to
your life, and your taste.
Shop to have the makings
of meals you will enjoy, can
prepare, and which will serve
your needs. Keep meal pat
terns in mind. Think of main
dishes, vegetables, breads, sa
lad makings, desserts, bever
ages, soups, snacks — then
shop for best buys within each
of the categories you need to
fill.

SOUTH MUST GROW
WHOLE NEW FOREST
To meet America’s de
mands for wood in the year
2000, the South is going to
have to grow a whole new
forest, reports the Southern
Forest Institute. To do this,
all Southern forest land will
have to be managed for in
creased productivity. And
another 30 million acres of
new forests must be planted
by 1985. Within 30 years, the
South’s woodlands will have
to provide 13 BILLION cubic
feet of wood each year, may
be even more.
