ern Forest Institute. Research
ers report tall trees absorb
and deflect noise better than
short ones; evergreens are
best for year-round sound ab
sorption. Scientists say the
>nost effective noise-reducing
results come from 75 foot
wide belts of closely spaced
trees planted between the
noise source and the area to
be protected.

BARK BLOTS SPILL SPOTS
I Researchers at the Texas
Forest Products Laboratory,
Lufkin, may have found a
new tool for fighting oil
spills at sea, reports the South
ern Forest Institute. It’s
ground bark from Southern
yellow pine trees. Tests show
shredded pine bark can ab
sorb up to three times its
own weight in crude oil in
seconds. Combined with the
oil, the bark floats and can
then be skimmed off the sur
face. The bark is non-toxic to
marine life, readily available
and the expense may be far
less than other chemical or
mechanical methods of clean
ing up oil spills at sea. Once
the bark and oil mixture is
collected, much of the spilled
oil can even be recovered.
Tax Practitioners and Others
Should Use Correct Forms
Atlanta, Georgia—Tax prac
titioners and other preparers
of tax returns should ask their
clients for the Federal income
tax forms package they receiv
ed in the mail and use the pre
addressed label it carried to
assure faster and more accu
rate processing, A. C. Ross,
District Director of Internal
Revenue for Georgia, said to
day. Individual taxpayers pre
paring their own return
should also follow these sug
gestions.
