Popular Toy Is Dangerous,
Warns Health Department
| Safety expert Roger Justice
!of the State Health Depart
ment today repeated a national
i warning issued earlier by the
Food and Drug Administration
j on a popular toy — “Clacker.”
“Ciackers are dangerous,”
j says Justice, “ and in our o
i pinion, should never have been
I marketed.”

glass-like balls connected by
a cord with a finger ring in
the center. The user slips on
the rings, and as he .moves his
finger up and down the balls
swing, “clacking” together on
up and down swings. If a child
happened to let go with some
force, the toy could become a
lethal weapon, Justice warns.
“There is danger from shat
tering-danger to a child’s
eyes—not to mention the possi
bility of head injuries,” Jus
tice points out. “We know of
instances where ciackers have
shattered; this is a distinct
possibility, and parents should
simply forbid their children
to play with the toy.”
According to the health of
ficial, at least one Atlanta ele
mentary school has banned the
toy from it’s school grounds.
A letter from Glenn Harbins,
principal of Morningside Ele
mentary School, went out to
parents recently, he reveals,
saying that the toys are dan
gerous and will be confiscat
ed if brought to the school.
“While we do not have the
authority to ban the sale of
ciackers, we would encourage
merchants to voluntarily Sus
pend sales,” Justice concludes.
