ton, 67, of Rt. 2, Nahunta pass
ed away late Wednesday
morning in the Pierce County
Hospital following a long ill
ness.
A native of Albemarle, N. C.,
he had lived in Brantley Coun
ty since 1932 and was a mem
ber of the Baptist Church. He
was a retired service station
attendant.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs.
Ola Williams Harington of
Nahunta; a daughter, Mrs.
Eula Bell Starnes of Monroe,
N. C.; a son, Cleotis Lee Har
rington of Monroe; a brother,
Eugene Harrington. There are
eleven grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Harrington
will be held at 3:00 o’clock Sa
turday afternoon from the
Bachlott Church of God with
Rev. W. F. Allen officiating.
Internment will be in the
Bachlott Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be
John V. Smith, Hoke Wilson,
Bobby Wilson, Edward Chan
cey, Alfred Thomas, and W.
L. Bohannon.
Mr. Harrington will be car
ried to his residence Thursday
afternoon and will remain un
til time for the service.

Larry Sirmans, son of Mr.
and Mrs. J. L. Sirmans of
Waycross, Ga.
Miss Batten is a graduate of
Nahunta High School and
Georgia College at Milledge
ville. She is presently employ
ed by the Glynn County Board
of Education, Brunswick.
Mr. Sirmans is serving in
the U.S. Navy and is stationed
in Charleston, S. C. He is a
graduate of Way cross High
School.
The wedding will take place
June 11th, at Bp. m., in the
Hickox Baptist Church.
All friends and relaitves are

covering at home after being
confined in Memorial Hospi
tal at Way cross.
Mrs. Bertie Lou Chapman
of Waycross was weekend
guest of Mr. and Mrs. S. K.
Allen. They were all dinner
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Steed Sunday.
Mrs. Jane Johns was ad
mitted to Memorial Hospital
in Waycross Tuesday after
suffering what was believed
to be a stroke at her home in
the early morning.
Mrs. Icy Johns is a patient
in Way cross hospital.

Mr. William H. “Billie”
Harris, 88, of Rt. 2, Patterson,
passed away Saturday after
noon in the Pierce County
Hospital following an illness
of several days.
A native of the Hickox Com
munity of Brantley County, he
had lived in Pierce County a
number of years.
A son of the late James B.
Harris and Sophia Thomas
Harris, he was a retired far
mer and member of the Pros
pect Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors are a daughter,
Mrs. Inez Hill of Patterson;
five sons, Lewis D. Harris, Mi
ami, Elvie Harris, Blackshear,
Oscar M. Harris, Patterson,
Dewey A. Harris, Jacksonville,
and Vernon Harris, Memphis,
Tenn.; four sisters, Mrs. Addie
Fiveash of Vidalia, Mrs.
Maude Lucas, Waycross, Mrs.
Ocie Crawford, Blackshear,
and Mrs. Myrtie Davis, Bruns
wick; four brothers, C. C. Har
ris, Bristol, J. A. Harris,
Blackshear, Joe Harris, Sav
annah, and Lyman Harris,
Blackshear. There are sixteen
grandchildren, and a number
of other relatives.
Services for Mr. Harris
were held at 4:00 o’clock
Monday afternoon from the
Laura Chapel Baptist Church.
Officiating was Elder Claude
Thornton, Elder Perry Harris,
and Rev. Charles Cox.
Interment was in the Laura
Chapel Cemetery.
Active palbearers were H.
M. Davis, Robert Harris, Ron
nie Harris, Frank Tatum,
Clyde Harris, and Gerod
Crawford.

Services Held
Much sorrow was occasion
ed in Brantley and surround
ing counties when it was learn
ed that little Gwendolynn
Lynette Lee, 1, infant daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie L.
Lee of Route 1, Nahunta was
drowned in the Satilla River
Sunday afternoon, May 30,
while on a family outing.
According to investigating
officers, the child was seated
with her parents on a floating
dock. Arising suddenly and
before either parent could re
strain her, she toppled for
ward into the water. Efforts
on the part of the father to
reach her were in vain. The
body was recovered shortly
before midnight by members
of the Wayne County Rescue
Squad.
In addition to the parents,
survivors include one sister,
Miss Karen Lee of Nahunta;
the paternal grandmother,
Mrs. Wilma F. Lee of Nahun
ta; the maternal grandmother,
Mrs Alice Hunter of Dublin;
the maternal grandfather,
George S. Connor of Folks
ton; the maternal great grand
mother, Mrs. Mamie Prickett
of Alamo.
Also surviving are several
aunts, uncles and other rela
tives.
Funeral services were held
at eleven o’clock Tuesday
morning, June 1, from the
Winokur Baptist Church with
the Rev. M. D. Thrift and the
Rev. E. J. Dixon conducting
the rites in the presence of a
large number of sorrowing
relatives and friends.
The body lay in state in the
church for one hour prior to
services.
Interment followed in the
family plot in Corinth Ceme
tery.
Serving as casketbearers
were the Messrs. Jerry Herrin,
Mike Harris. Stanley Herrin
and George Parker.
The many beautiful floral
tributes attested to the love
and affection felt for the ba
by and her family.
The family has the sympathy
of their many friends in their
bereavement.
The Chambless Funeral
Home of Nahunta was in
charge of arrangements.

Seniors Will Receive
Diplomas on June 4th
Graduation ceremonies for
the fourth graduating class of
Brantley County High School
will be held Friday evening
at 7:30 P. M. on the football
field. The 70-71 graduation
class is composed of 92 mem
bers. Mr. Paul Anderson,
weightlifting champion, will
deliver the commencement ad
dress.

Ruby Chesser, freshman at

She was awarded the Out
standing Freshman Award in
Home Economics for her but

The Hickox Baptist Church
honored its two 1971 senior
members in the Sunday morn
ing service, May 30.
Miss Ann Rowell, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Rowell,
and Pat Rowell, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lyman Rowell, were
presented Bibles from the
church.

MISS RUBY CHESSER RECEIVES AWARD

Passed Away

Mrs. Mary Lettie Byrd, 78,
of Rt. 1, Nahunta, passed a
way late Monday night in the
McCoy-Jackson Hospital in
Folkston following a brief ill
ness.
A native and life-long resi
dent of Brantley County, she
was a daughter of the late
John Williamson Davison and
Eliza Harris Davison. She
was the widow of the late
Charles Liston Byrd.
She has been a member of
the New Hope Primitive Bap
tist Church since September
4th, 1971.
Survivors are three daugh
ters, Mrs. Lois Lee and Mrs.
Louise Wainwright, both of
Nahunta, and Mrs. Doris Lo
rene Johnson of Jacksonville;
a son, Linton Byrd of Jackson
ville. There are seventeen
grandchildren; three great
grandchildren, and a number
of other relatives.
Services for Mrs. Byrd will
be held at 4:00 o’clock Friday
afternoon from the New
Hope Primitive Baptist
Church.
Officiating will be Elder
Leonard Dryden, Rev. E. J.
Dixon and Rev. Pete Thrift.
Internment will be in the
Hickox Cemetery.
