Recently a severe outbreak
of sleeping sickness among
horses has occured in Mexico
and Texas, with several cases
beingreportedin Louisiana. It
is reported that thousands of
animals have died from this
disease.
The disease has also affected
several persons and some
deaths have been reported as
being caused by this disease.
The disease is transmitted
from one animal to another,
and possibly to humans, by
mosquitoes and blood sucking
type flies.
Every year some horses in
Brantley County are lost by
becoming infected with sleep
ing sickness.
There is no known cure for
this disease, once the animal
becomes sick, but a very ef
fective vaccination can be
given healthy animals to pre
vent them taking the disease.
All horse owners are urged to
have their animals vaccinated
unless they have already done
s© this year. Also protect
family members, especially
children, from being bitten
bymosquitoes and other blood
sucking insects.
This can best be done by
keeping door and window
screens in good repair and by
spraying with Insecticides.
When children are allowed to
be outside in late afternoon
and evening, or allowed to
play in dark shaded areas
where mosquito population is
high, they should be protect
ed from being bitten by wear
ing long-legged and long
sleeved garments and use of
repellent on face, neck and
hands.
Some GI Loan
Users May Get
More Benefits
Atlanta — Persons who
used their GI loans to pur
chase homes before May 7,
1968, may be eligible for
additional home loan benefits
from the Veterans Admini
stration, according to Georgia
Veterans Service Director Pete
Wheeler.
He said, “Many veterans of
World War II and the Korean
War, including both active
duty personnel and retirees
who are eligible, have accrued
substantial amounts in unused
home loan benefits. These are
veterans who obtained loans
during the years when loan
guaranty was considerably
lower than it is at the present
time.”
The current VA loan guar
anty maximum is $12,500, or
60 per cent of the amount of
the loan, whichever is less.
This maximum has been in ef
fect since May 7,1968.
When the VA began the
home loan program after
World War 11, the guaranty
maximum was $4,000, or 50
per cent of the loan amount.
This maximum was increased
to 60 per cent or $7,500 in
.September 1951 and remained
in effect until the current
$12,500 figure was set in
1968. _ ,
“Therefore,” said Wheeler,
“any veteran who financed his
home with a VA guaranteed
loan before May 7,1968, now
has a home loan entitlement
of either $5,000 or $8,500
available, depending on when
he actually received bis loan.
Veterans interested in
knowing just what entitle
ment they may be eligible for
should contact any office of
the Georgia Department of
Veterans Service.

prompt, temporary relief from
pain and burning itch in hemor

Homemakers are always In
terested in recipes, and es
pecially good and different
ones. During the early 1950’s
the Home Demonstration Clubs
(named at this time) publish
ed a recipe book containing
favorites of the club members.
In the July 1971 Issue of the
McCall’s magadne, recipes
are given of a cooking con
test which was announced in
the February issue of the mag
idne and which they state
drew more than 21,000 entries.
The third place wiimer in that
contest went to a Mrs. Karen
Naes of Florissant, Missouri.
She said it was handed down
in her husband’s family and she
called it Mashed Potato Spice
Cake. This same recipe was in
the Brantley County cookbook
and was submitted by Mrs. Mil
ton Manning, but Mrs. Man
ning said it came from Mrs.
Claude D. Smith. Jule Smith
said it came to her from North
Carolina, and she calls it an
Irish Potato Cake. She said her
family prefers this cake to
fruit cake at Christmas time.
We thought our readers would
like to have a copy of Jule
Smith's recipe. Try it, it is
delicious.

LEAF ANALYSIS
It’s physical examination
time for pecan trees. The ex
amination, according to Exten
sion Horticulturist Glenn
Taylor, includes a leaf analysis.
He says this analysis then
guides the grower in applying
right amounts of plant food at
right times. Leaf analysis is a
service of Cooperative Exten
sion, and county agents can
provide interested persons with
the details.

There are immediate
steps you and your family
can take to help control
environmental pollution.
Amway, a leading in-home

suggests some positive
things you can do:
- Remain calm since cool

average of 200 gallons of
water a day, without the
consumption of industry .
- Running dishwashers
and clothes washers only
when necessary and only at
full capacity.
- Keep at a minimum the
operation of the garbage dis
posal.
- Water the lawn only m

WATER POLLUTION: Use
limited or no-phosphate de
tergents in your washing
machine. Measure your de
tergent according to the
manufacturer’s label instruc
tions. With many cities en
forcing phosphate percent
ages in detergents, check
that your detergent con
forms to local ordinances on
phosphorus content. Many
ordinances require that de

than 8.7% phosphorus by

LOW COST FIRE INSURANCE
To be sure your summer

believe good housekeeping
is for the other fellow. Here
are a few corrective steps to
take:
- Maintain refuse cans in
good condition with tight
fitting lids.
- Take a litter walk -
picking up candy wrappers,
etc., as you go along.
- Equip your car or
truck with a litter bag and
use it.
— Leave picnic grounds
and campsites better than
you found them.
- Bring your own trash
bags just in case the camp
site containers are full or
none provided. Bring trash
home if necessary.
- Never use highways or
open areas for disposal of
washing machines, furniture
and large items. This is be
coming common practice,
creating eyesores in our
finest recreational areas.
AIR POLLUTION: Walk or
bicycle instead of driving
whenever possible. It’s good
for the body as well as the
environment.
- When you take your
car, take a friend. Car pools,
public transportation and
more efficient management
of short trips out of the
house cut down on the
number of cars in the
streets.
- Investigate anti-pollu
tion devices on new car pur
chases.
- Don’t burn leaves. Use
them for compost. Start a
compost pile for disposal of
grass cuttings and vegetable
wastes. If you must burn
trash, use only a properly
designed incinerator.
NOISE POLLUTION: Noise
is being labeled as the “new
pollutant” by many author
ities including the con
cerned medical profession.
Doctors are beginning to
label noise in the home,
factory and outdoors as a
major influence increasing
tension and related diseases.
- Turn down the volume
on your entertainment
appliances.
- Noise-test appliances,
toys, etc. before you buy.
recommends using the fol
lowing checkpoints to
assure safety and effective
ness:
Check the extinguisher’s
“BC” rating. “BC” refers to
classes of fires: A is for
paper or wood; B is oil or
gasoline; C is electrical.
Dry chemical extin
guishers are not rated for
“A” because it is possible
for paper or wood to re
ignite after the “blanket”
disperses.
Check if the extinguisher
is UL (Underwriters’ Lab
oratories) or FM (Factory
Mutual Laboratory) ap
proved.
Shade trees are very vul
nerable to many harmful or
killing agents around our
homes. Enviromental
changes have been due to
man's necessity and wishes.
Water, gas and sewer lines
destroy a large percentage of
our tree roots. Fill dirt,
mechanical damage and
chemical damage accounts
for additional losses. All of
these "alternations" around
our home can kill trees in
one year or can be the reason
for a tree dying 10 or 15 years
Forest trees have a better
enviroment for growth. For
ests provide a natural mulch
to control water runoff and
adds humus to the soil. Yard
trees grow in a packed soil
and nearly all rain fall drains
away without effective per
colation.
Birds and other forms of
wildlife assist by nature's
process in preventing and
controlling many insects and
disease. Shade trees in urban
areas do not have this chance.
Overuse of chemicals and
fertilizers on lawns are some
times detrimental to growth.
In most instances man is the
most dreaded enemy of our
forests. Unwise use destroys
nature's enviroment. Wise
use of our resources main
taines life indefinitely.

How much does a porpoise
eat? One ancient myth, still
widely believed, is that a
porpoise eats its own weight in
fish every 24 hours. However,
after keeping daily records of
food consumption for more
than 20 years, Marineland of
Florida biologists know that
an adult bottlenose porpoise
weighing between 350 to 400
pounds will grow fat on 15 to
20 pounds of fish a day.
Non-toxic extinguishers
using harmless chemicals are
especially good for small
grease and electrical fires.
Selecting an extinguisher
that’s resistant to moisture
and freezing will work well
in unheated areas.
Dry chemical fire extin
guishers are especially effec
tive for stopping oil, paint,
grease and gasoline fires
where using water would be
hazardous. They spray a
fine dust at the base of the
fire. The chemical, upon
contact with the fire, forms
a harmless gas which shuts
out oxygen and quickly
smothers the flames. Fires
can be put out in seconds.

ATLANTA (PEN) -
Consumption of gasoline in
Georgia increased substantially
in 1970 compared to the
previous year, according to
Eric Holmes, Executive
Secretary of the Petroleum
Council of Georgia.
Total gasoline consumption
in Georgia in 1970 was
2,318,640,000, Holmes
reported. By comparison,
Holmes pointed out, gasoline
consumption amounted to
2,190,245,000 in 1969.
Holmes said that 1970
gasoline consumption in
Georgia was 5.9 per cent
higher than the previous year.
This compares with a
nationwide increase of 3.9 per
cent in gasoline consumption.
On the national scale, stated
Holmes, the leading gasoline
consuming state in the
country was California with
9,227,084,000 gallons. The
total gasoline consumption for
the entire 50 United States
was 92,051,037,000. This
represents a 46.6 per cent
increase in gasoline
consumption over 1960.
