With summer at hand and
many families vacationing,
we in the Forestry Commission
would like to offer some easy
advice to parents of all child
ren who enjoy the woods either
at home or away. Children
mean only to taste but with
m any a com mon gardenfree or
shrub, a taste is all that’s
necessary to bring tragic re
sults.
When the forest was in every
settler’s front yard, death was
an every day event. Two
hundred years ago the tender
foot trying to live off the land
often unintentionally met
agonizing death by no other
hand but his own. He died not
of gunshot or silent blade but
of a wrong guess in the matter
of what to eat. If the birds
and squirrels ate of a tree, the
beginning outdoorsman felt he
might safely do the same and
paid excruitiatlngly for his
error.
Today, when we never lack
for wholesome food, we give
no thought to eating the leaves
or fruit of forest trees and
shrubs which appear tempting
to one on a surival diet. Yet,
children seem to wonder about
the taste of the beautiful red

TOUR
GEORGIA
ATHENS, Georgia—Once
upon a time the University of
Georgia was given one
hundred paintings by one
hundred American artists
covering one hundred years of
American art. And that
marked the beginning of the
Georgia Museum of Art.
The original gift came in
1945 from Alfred Heber
Holbrook, a New York lawyer
who elected to retire and
move south with his art
collection-the Eva Underhill
Holbrook Memorial Collection
of American Art.
Twenty-six years later, the
Museum’s collection is
stronger than ever in 19th and
early 20th century paintings
and includes more than 1,500
fine prints, over 500 paintings
and an equal number of
drawings.
Students from
kindergartens, elementary
schools, and high schools all
over the State have visited the
Georgia Museum. And the
Museum has visited them. By
arrangement with the Georgia
Center for Continuing
Education, the Director has
traveled with some 20
paintings to 180 communities
around the State and made a
number of trips to the larger
cities.
During the past three years,
six exhibitions organized or

übs. Shiny leaves as glossy as
candled fruit, seem to appear
sugar-coated to unwary child
ren just discovering the wond
ers of their enviroment. Foli
ate some basic precautions re
plants in the woods or garden.
Any tree shrub having dark
green leaves (like the stripes
like the dark stripes on a wat
ermelon) is more likely than
not to be toxic. Mountain la
urel, rhodendron, oleander,
boxwood, and privet qualify in
this class. Any tree bearing
seeds in pods such as black lo
cust ought to be left alone;
this includes vines such as wi
steria. Any plant bearing ber
ries of a bright color such as
holly, yew, elderberry (that's
right, most of the time elder
berryis full of prussic acid) or
dogwood will have chemicals
in its bark, leaves or fruit that
may produce violent illness or
death.
As with all things there are
exceptions in nature but the
characteristics above apply to
the majorityof shrubs and trees
capable of striking down the
inquisitive nibbier or taster.

Dyer Memorial as Rock Eanle 4-H Center
This portrait of the late C. Dorsey Dyer, held by his sons C. Dorsey Jr. and Cooper
and admired by his wife Ethel Lee, now hangs in the Union-Camp educational
building at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. A memorial service in honor of Mr. Dyer was
a part of the recent 38th annual Georgia 4-H Council meeting at the Center. Mr Dyer
served 25 years with the University of Georgia Extension Service and was head of its
forestry department at the time of his death in July, 1970. He was chairman of the
National 4-H Forestry Development Committee which organized the forestry project
in which thousands of U.S. boys and girls participate each year. And the highly
successful 4-H forestry camps in Georgia are due largely to his efforts and interest in
young people.
