state forestry agencies and

care around fires in the
woods as the warm weather
comes and more and more
people take to the outdoors
for recreation.
During the 1960’5, more
than 90 percent of the forest
fires in the United States
were caused by man; the
remainder by lightning and
other natural occurrences.
The goal of the 1970’s is to
halt man-caused wild fires
and protect our natural forest
resources for all Americans to
enjoy.

ATLANTA (PRN) - The
time of the yellow daisy is
approaching at Stone
Mountain Park. And this year,
along with a special three-day
celebration, an added highlight
will be the eye-catching new
USA markers on Stone
Mountain Trail, recently
designated a National
Recreation Trail.
The six-and-one-half mile
trail around Stone Mountain,
including the historic walk-up
path, is one of 31 National
Trails which span the nation,
and the only one so named in
Georgia. Once traveled by
•Indians, -explored by Spanish
conquistadors, and now
walked daily by 25,000
summer visitors, the trail’s
new markers were unveiled in
a recent dedication ceremony.
Park officials said parts of the
trail around, the base are
believed to have been in use
since Paleo Indians hunted
bison in this area eight to ten
thousand years ago.
Trail hikers and recreation
enthusiasts will have three
days this year to enjoy the
Yellow Daisy Festival, which
takes its name from the
profusion of native yellow
daisies that annually bloom at
the Park. The third annual
event is set for September
10-12. Hours are from 10 a.m.

Exhibits include crafts,
flowers, and art by the Atlanta
Artists Club, Inc. Craft
demonstrations display a
number of skills and services
which date from the
mid-1800’s—a sorghum mill
and grist mill, blacksmith,
potter, basket maker and quilt
maker. There will be a variety
of contests, such as hog
calling, log sawing, whittling,
fiddling, folk dancing,
mountain clogging, and canoe
jousting.
In addition, Stone
Mountain Park’s annual photo
contest is getting in on the
Festival action as well, with
September 12 named Yellow
Daisy Camera Day. On that
day, hostesses in antebellum
dresses and Georgia’s Junior
Miss, Susie Witted, will be
posing especially for shutter
bugs. Georgia residents, as well
as out-of-state visitors, are
eligible to compete in the
photo contest, which
continues through October 31.
The Department of
Industry and Trade, Tourist
Division, says the time of the
yellow daisy is a great time to
visit Stone Mountain Park.
There are colorful scenes to
photograph, exciting
happenings to attend each
day.
