WOOD NEEDS
RISING
ATLANTA, GA To meet
America’s projected wood
needs by the year 2000, the
South is going to have to
grow a whole new forest!
That’s the conclusion of
the Southern Forest Resource
Council, a 21-member forest
industry and landowner
committee working in co
operation with government
agencies and consulting for
esters to insure there will be
enough trees to meet the
wood needs of our next
generation.
Within 30 years, govern
ment estimates project
another 100 million
Americans and each one will
use more wood, in one form
or another, than people do
now. Trees are important for
other reasons too. They pro
vide beauty, places for recre
ation, wildlife habitat, soil
erosion control, watershed
protection and trees are
essential for a healthful envi
ronment (Inch acre of
young, growing forest pro
duces foui tons of wood and
converts six tons of carbon
dioxide into four tons of
oxygen each year, enough
oxygen to meet the annual
needs of I 8 people 1
Because the South has less
industry, more undeveloped
land and a longer growing
season, this region has a
potential for growing trees
unmatched by any other
section of the country.
One-hundred and ninety
eight million acres of forests
are now growing in the twelve
states of the South. They
produce wood for more than
five thousand forest products.
By 2000, there will be ten
million less acres available for
growing trees. But Southern
forests will have to produce
twice as much wood as the
1468 harvest of six billion
cubic feet.
The new forest, to be
planted and growing by 1485.
is called The Third Forest.

FARM LOANS
The rising value of farm
units over the past decade is
reflected in the staggering
growth in average size of farm
mortgage loans. Last year, the
average size reported by life
insurance companies was
$82,220— compared with
$23,630 in 1960. Meantime,
the average for the Nation’s 12
Federal Land Banks jumped
from $12,850 to $31,570.
