ON DRUGS
A drug is ANY substance which has an
effect upon body or mind. A drug may be
naturally occuring of animal, plant, or
mineral origin or a drug may be synthetic
(made in a laboratory). Under this broad
definition food and water may be consider
ed as drugs and many times are taken into
considerationby a physician during the care
of a patient. Drug abuse is the mis-use
of any substance which has an effect upon
body or mind. Many people are prone to
mis-use a drug which has effect upon the
body such as aspirin, cough syrups, over
the counter asthmatic preparations, sleep
ing tablets, etc. This is because people
attempt self diagnosis, and self treatment
to relieve a disease process which is either
real or imagined. If the disease process
is imagined the person would have probably
recovered without having taken any nost
rum, however by so doing they have expos
ed themselves to needless medication which
in itself may cause bodily harm. On the
other hand if the disease process were real
and the individual attempted self diagnosis
and self treatment then many times the
symptoms of a serious disease are hidden
until such time they become so uncomfor
able that competent medical assistance can
not be effectively rendered and the person
is told in so many words, "go home and
die. "
Many over the counter medications are
"effective", however there are many which
are disigned more to "sell" than to "take'.'
The federal government through the Food
& Drug Administration and theßureau of
Narcotic and Dangerous Drugs is finally
taking steps to control the abuse of over
the counter medications.
In the meantime, to be safe do not take
any over the counter medication unless it
is recommended by your physician. If you
can not do this and you feel you must "take
something" be sure and read all the label.
Next week: Abuse of Prescribed Drugs.

that what appeared to Mallard
to be conspiracy between a
government grader and buyers
caused him to lose 10-cents a
pound on his crop.
Mallard told Dean that the

SINS OF THE DESPOSITION
We hear a lot of preaching about sin in
these days! You ask, "What is sin?" Most
folk would answer that sin is drinking, gam
bling, murder, profanity and all the sins
of the flesh. Yes, such acts are sin and
God declares that "they whichdo such things
shall not inherit the kindom of God" (Gal.
5:19-21). Yet these are not the worst sins
and those guilty of such are not the worst
sinners.
The truth is there are two classes of
sins- sins of the body and sins of the dis-
position.
The prodigal son is a type of the first, the
elder brother of the second (Luke 15-32).
The prodigal wasted both his money and
his life in "riotous living". He seems to
have committed every sin in the book. No
doubt he drank, gambled, indulged in shame
ful immorality, until finally he sank to the
level of a pig.
The elder brother lived a decent and re
spectable life. He was obedient to his
father and a hard worker. He never stray
ed from home. As far as we know he never
was guilty of any immorality.
Now which of these is the worse sinner,
the more hopeless case? Most would say
the prodigal. But is this judgement corr
ect?
Lookatthese tWo brothers as Jesus ends
His story in Luke 15. One of them is seat
ed at the table. He is wearing a new robe
and shoes which his father has given him.
Onhis finger is a ring signifying member
ship in ght family. There is joy, love and
forgiveness in his heart. What has happ
ened to the poor wretched sinner? He has
felt his need, he has come to Jesus where
he found forgiveness,restoration and eter
nal life.
Now, look at the elder brother-moral,
hard-working, patient, dutiful. With all
these virtures, lookat this baby, "pouting 1
outside of his own father's door. Analyze
his attitude. Jealousy, envy, anger, pride,
touchiness, cruelty and above all, self
righteousness. So he, who was supposed
to be on the inside, finds himself on the
outside in the darkness, unhappy and bitter.
Are not such sins of the disposition worse
to live in, and for others to live with, than
sins of the body? Yes, indeed, for Jesus
said "the publicans and the harlots go into
the Kingdom of God before you" (Matt. 21-
31).
Certainly Jesus is not telling us that we
should commit the sins of the flesh. But
He is showing us that we can shut God out
of our hearts by "works", even good works.
It is easy to be self-righteous, to be in the
church, to be like the elder brother, never
to feel any need of God and never exper
iencing Christ's saving power. This is the
most dangerous sin.

conspiracy, but it certainly

en before. It appears they are

dirt prices on the last day,"
Thursday was the last day of
tobacco auctions at the Black-
shear center.
Dean said he talked with Tal
madge by phone and that Tal-
madge said the incident would
be brought to the attention of
the U.S. Department of Ag
riculture.
"Sen. Talmadge said there
would be an investigation,"
Dean said.
