We’re working underground, too.
More and more we’re putting new distribution lines
underground. It isn't always easy. The rocky land
around Stone Mountain is a lot harder to dig than
the soft soils of South Georgia.
You might think that electric cable would be
more trouble-free buried in the earth than stretched
through the air. But there are many complications
associated with placing electric cable underground.
Research and experience, however, are helping to
overcome these difficulties.
Already we’re able to put half of all new resi
dential customers on underground service. That’s
over 70,000 to date, in 10 years, we hope to have
all new residential customers on underground. By
then, this burrowing business should be second
nature for us, too.

FARM HAZARDS
Agriculture has the repu
tation of being one of
America’s most hazardous in
dustries. Although the agricul
tural work force accounted for
only 4.4 percent of the
nation’s total work force, it
accounted for nearly 10
percent of the disabling work
injuries and nearly 17 percent
of the work fatalities last year.
