BULB SEASON APPROACHES
September is a very import
ant month for giving consider
ation to spring flowering bulbs.
It is time to select your plant
ing sit, prepare the soil, and
orderthe bulbs. Garden centers
will soon be receiving their
stock. Colorful displays of
tulips, hyacinths, daffodils,
crocus, scillas, dutch iris ,
snowdrops, and glory of the
snow will tempt many gard
eners.
Most bulbs thrive where they
get long hours ofdirect sunshine
and plenty of moisture. A well
drained soil is a must. Plant
ings made on slightly sloping
land are not only beautiful but
are not as susceptible to poor
drainage. Soils for bulbs can
be greatly improved by the
addition of several inches of
some forms of organic matter.
While tempting yourself atthe
time you are looking at the
beautiful pictures of spring, be
sure to study the depth of pl
anting charts. Success depends
in part of tire correct depth of
planting.
THE BEST BUY
NEW DAYLILIES
The fact that September is
considered an ideal time to
transplant daylilies is well know
to many gardeners. However,
few of these same gardeners
realize that there are new day
lily varieties available that
may bloom twice or even three
time during the same summer.
These are referred to as repeat
blooming daylilies. An added
incentive for gardeners to seek
such plants is the beautiful
colors and petal formations that
hybridizers have achieved in
this breeding effort. If you
plan to add daylilies in your
garden this fall don't be satis
fied with the more common
varieties. Visit a local hybrid
izer and choose these more out
standing ones.
DIVIDE AND TRANSPLANT
DAYLIUES
September is thought of as an
ideal time to divide and plant
daylilies in Georgia. Plants
transplanted during this month
will have a chance to send out
new roots and become estab
lished before the winter weather
arrives.

Swelling Os
Hemorrhoidal

caused by inflammation
Doctors have found a medica

prompt, tempora^ relief from
pain and burning itch in hemor- ।
rhoidal tissues. Then it actually
helps shrink swelling of these

The procedure is a relatively
easy one and consist of lifting
crowded clumps and shaking or
washingthedirt away from the
roots. The next step is to care
fully separate to obtain individ
ual plants with as many healthy
roots as possible. The foliage
ofthese divisions should be cut
back 1/3 their origianl height
before planting. The final step
is to plant the divisions in pre
pared beds or individual locat
ions. Roots are covered with
approximately 1 inch of soil.
Mulching will also be bene
ficial.

ARMY WORM CONTROL
Hay producers who hope to
make a late cutting of coastal
bermuda for hay should keep
on the lookout for army worms.
The fall army worms can ruin
a hay field in only a few days,
unless spray or dust is applied
as soon as the worms are de
tected.
Sevin dust or spray is very
effective against these insects
if applied before damage is
done and does not require any
waiting period before cutting
the grass.
Good coastal bermuda hay
seems to be rather scarce this
year anyone who has good grass
that can be cut fcr hay should
make every effort to protect
and cut it for hay.

TREES LIKE
AIRCONDITIONERS
The daily cooling effect of
a healthy, mature tree is
equivalent to 10 room-sized
air conditioners operating 20
hours a day, according to the
Southern Forest Institute.
Besides regenerating
breathable air by substituting
oxygen for carbon dioxide, a
tree cools the air in its
immediate environment.
Through the process of
evaporation, air beneath a
tree’s limbs may be as much
as 20 degrees cooler than just
a few feet outside the
branches. On a hot summer
day, a thick canopy of
mature shade trees can cool a
house by as much as 12
degrees.
TREES WORK
FOR MAN
Scientists estimate that the
daily activities of one human
being require the photosyn
thesis activity of 78 trees to
maintain a balance between
oxygen produced and carbon
dioxide used up. During an
average day, one tree absorbs
the carbon dioxide and pro
duces the oxygen needed to
offset the effects of one per
son's normal breathing pro
cess. However, when a person
drives a car or heats a home
or engages in other such
oxygen-using activities, the
efforts of many more trees
78 trees per day are needed.

FARM INCOME
The farm cost-price situa
tion, translated into farm
income, means producers will
gross more in 1971 but may
net less. This is because of the
persistent rise in expenses.
Gross U. S. farm income for
the year is now estimated at
around ss7'/s billion—up from
$56.2 billion in 1970. Net
income, however, will be
slightly under last year’s $15.8
