Plant Bowen, near Cartersville
Compatible.
Indians used to live here. In harmony with nature.
More recently, farmers plowed these fields. Cotton
and soybeans grew. And cattle grazed the smooth,
green pastures.
Now we’ve come. With the largest power plant
on our lines. We’ll be in harmony with nature, too.
The plant’s cooling towers will cool for reuse the
water needed in the production of electricity. So no
warm water will be discharged to the Etowah River,
which flows by the plant.
Electrostatic precipitators will remove 98 per
cent of all particulate matter from the flue gases. And
the stack is 1000 feet tall—almost twice the height
of the Washington Monument—to assure adequate
dispersal of these gases into the upper atmosphere.
Here, environmental protection will cost us more
than $25 million. But we want to continue in the
tradition of this pleasant countryside. Compatibly.

What Keeps Nahunta Running?
Every one of us uses an average of three gallons of oil every day.
So do all the other 205 million Americans. Oil and natural gas supply 75 percent
of our energy needs: almost all transportation, most of what is used for cooking and
heating, more than 40 percent of all our electricity.
A country that runs on oil can’t afford to run short.

Hears Nader Testimony
WASHINGTON (PRN) -
Consumer Crusader Ralph
Nader has told the House
Committee on Interstate and
Foreign commerce that an
administration bill to protect
the public against hazardous
products « just “a paper
tiger.”
Nader told Eighth District
W.S. (Bill) Stuckey, Jr. of
Georgia and other members of
the committee that he favored
another pending bill which
would really create an
i ndependent, broad-power,
open-information agency to
protect consumers from
unreasonable risks of injury.
The Committee is
conducting a series of hearings
on two bills over which it has
life or death power and Nader
was one of a parade of
witnesses. His testimony came
on the day that the Food and
Drug Administration made its
first move against
hexachlorophene, announcing
it would require a warning
label on concentrated
cleansing solutions containing
that well-known germ killer.

THE FUN
OF
CHRISTMAS!
Nader said he fully
supported the concept that
the proposed consumer safety
agency, suggested by both
pending bills, should be
independent rather than
within the Department of
Health, Education and
Welfare. He said the openness
and full availability of all
information is urgently needed
to create consumer confidence
in product safety. He
reminded that continual HEW
and FDA reorganizations
“were each followed by the
same failures to protect the
consumer.”
Nader also emphasized the
vital importance of having a
comprehensive (umbrella)
agency because “the
fragmentation of safety
programs between over 30
federal agencies has generally
led to them being ineffective
in reducing product injuries.”
In conclusion, he called for
criminal penalties for reckless
failures to meet legal
requirements for preventing
consumer casualties.
