BUYING FURNITURE
With the Christmas Season
at hand, some families may
wish to make their home more
beautiful and liveable by in
vesting in some new furnit
ure- so what's new?
The latest styles and trends
in furnishings were shown re
cently at the fall furniture
market in High Point, North
Carolina. These included:
New Colors: Emphasis on the
"earthy" colors, especially
yellow, green, apricot, and
orange. Pink has also made a
comeback and was shown in
many upholstered lines such
as sofas and chairs.
New trends in furniture:
Multi-purpose furniture such
as love seats, samll sofas and
hassocks which convert to
beds, chests and tables with
lift-up tops to reveal storage
areas, and chests which open
to full size dining tables; new
lightweight furniture made of
polystyrene and polyurethane
finished to look like wood sur
faces; expanded use of cab-
inet woods such as pine in
complete furniture lines; ex
perimental finishes which re
semble lacquer but without
many of the draw backs such
as the tendency to scratch
easily; continued use of plas
tic, glass and chrome in con
temporary furnishings but
combined with brass and other
metals; molded furniture to
compensate for the declining
number of furniture craftsmen
and accelerating costs of pro
duction.

prints in vivid colors, espec
ially traditional prints; corr-

and fabric for covering walls.
It is often difficult to judge
the quality of upholstered fur
niture since much of the work
manship is covered up. One
must rely to a great extent on
the reputation of the store and
salesman in making such a
purchase.
These are several indications
of quality workmanship for
which the consumer can look.
These include straight smooth
welts, patterns matched at the
seams and on the center of the
back and cushions, straight sk
irts and concealed zippers,
and snaps and elastic straps to
hold seat cushions in place.
There are several types of
cushioning and filling from
which to choose. Polyurethane
foam and latex foam rubber
are best for seat sushions if
you want firm seating. Softer
cushions are usually filled with
polyester fiber fill but are
found under many brand na
mes. Down provides the soft
est of all seating, but is usua
lly available only on a special
order basis or in luxury items.
Sit down in a chair or sofa
before buying. Is it firm e
nough? Soft enough? Is the
pitch of the seat right? Does
the back mold to your back?
Can you cross your legs com
fortably? Don't be guilty of
sacrificing comfort for beauty.
Such a purchase can only lead
to dissatisfaction when used.
