If you plan to plant a tree
or trees in the yard this year,
you should put much thought
in the selection of the right
kind of tree to best suit your
purpose.
Normally, a tree is planted
for shade, shape, background,
screening or color. The lo
cation chosen and the effect
desired are factors to be con
sidered in the tree selection.
Hardiness of a tree is very
important as well. Usually
native trees are best because
they are able to withstand
weather changes. The type
of soil you have will influence
the growth of the tree. When
making the selection, wheth
er or not you plan to irrigate
should be kept in mind.
The form or shape of the
mature tree is another thing
to consider. A broad-spread

not the tree to be planted next
to the drive or house. Neither

A mature tree, naturally, is
quite different is size from a
seedling; therefore, be sure
the end result will fit the pur
posed planting site. Large
trees, thirty feet and up,
should not be planted closer
then twenty feet to the house,
drive or paved walk.
Remember, a tree may have
some undesirable character
istics. For example, oaks,
hickories, and crabapples
produce fruits that attract
children who may use them
for missiles. Other trees pro
duce seeds that sprout all over
the yard, and still others cause
endless raking.
As you see, selecting the
right tree is not a "snap" de
cision.
