VOLUME 49-NUMBER 1
PASTOR'S PEN
"The Door of Opportunity"
I Corinthians 16:1-9
The poet Parkington has spoken for most
of us when he said,
"I wish that there were some wonderful place
Called .the land of beginning again
Where all our mistakes and all of our heartaches
And all of our poor, selfish grief
Could be dropped like a shabby coat at the door,
And never put on again."
This is a part of the nature of man, and it
is part of our nature as the children of God
to desire to do better in the future than we
have in the past.
In this new year we do have the opport
unity of finding the land of "beginning a
gain. 11 There will be new challenges and
new responsibilities. The new year will
not, however, be completely different from
the old year. Many of the things which
were in the old will follow us into the new.
We have a tendency to wish for a fantasy
land. Paul, no doubt, had such thoughts,
but instead of fleeing we hear him saying,
"But I will stay here at Ephesus until the
feast of Pentecost for there is a great op
portunity of doing useful work, and there
are many people against me. " At times we
all have unrealistic ideas about the golden
door of opportunity that will open for us to
morrow. We must confess that we are
looking for the goose that will lay the gold
en eggs. In fact, we face the peril of di
viding time into two periods--the past and
the future. The past has gone into the tomb
of time. The future is yet in the womb of
time. The only time we have is today.
I. Today is our opportunity for effective
service. Our Lord saw this for we hear
him say, "I must work the works of him that
sent me, while it is day. .. " (John 9:4). It
is foolish for us to spend our time weeping
over lost opportunities for they are now
history. It is foolish to wait for the future.
It is just a dream, a mirage. The only
thing we can be certain of is the present.
11. There will be many adversaries. In
this weare no different than Paul and Jesus.
They both had their adversaries. Paul
preaching Jesus Christ, was confronted
with opposition that led to his imprison
ment. Jesus was opposed by the religious
leaders, tempted by the devel, and even His
family and disciples tried to dissuade Him
from His course in life.
111. Seize the opportunities for service.
It is a great day to be alive, and great op
portunities will offer themselves, doors
will open. God will open some for us.
There is the door of divine sonship. I'm
not talking about the sonship of Christ, but
your sonship offered by God in Christ (John
1;12). Some have aiready come through this
door. It is still open that you may come.
Then there is the door of faith. We do not
have to walk by sight but by faith (Prov. 3:
5-6). We can walk in the very presence of
God as did Abraham, Enoch and others.
