WHY FERTILIZER?
One reason farmers have to
fertilize their land is because
crops remove a lot of fertilizer
elements from the soil. For
this reason, the grower begins
planning next year’s fertilizer
needs as soon as one crop is
harvested, and the yield of his
current crop has a lot to do
with how much plant food he
will buy the coming season.
Generally speaking, the higher,
the yield the more plant food
the soil.
corn crop harvested for grain
removes 90 pounds of nitrogen,
35 pounds of phosphate and 25
pounds of potash. Thirty-five
bushels of soybeans remove 20
pounds of phosphate and 50 po
unds of potash.
We know that these nutrients
must be replaced, else yields
would dwindle away to practi
cally nothing.
FEEDING LAWNS
Extension recommendations
for fertilizing lawns include 4-
1-2 and 3-1-2 ratios for general
purpose use. Horticulturist
Gerald Smith says there are a
number of reasons for includ
ing these ratios.

several applications of nitrogen

Second, he continues, resear

HIGH in nitrogen, LOW in ph
osphorus and MEDIUM in po
tassium.
Smith points out, however,
that approximately 4,000 soil
test results from Georgia lawns
in two recent years indicate a
reverse fertility level for phos
phorus and potash. In fact,
65 percent of the lawn samples
tested high in phosphorus, wh
ile only 19 percent were in
high potassium.
Recently several lawn ferti
lizer analyses have been intro
duced with z 4-1-2- or 3-1-2 as
a ratio. These include a 16-4-
8 analysis as a 4-1-2 ratio and
12-4-8 as a 3-1-2 ratio. Smith
says there are a number of
analysis available, including a
ls-4-9 and a 12-5-8, which are
close enough to these ratios to
be useful in lawn grass ferti
lization.
PESTICIDES
Just about everybody has
some left-over pesticides ar
ound the house someplace. It’s
a good idea to gather up all
these and store them in a dry
area. And this area should
be located so that normal work
will not involve using it. Be
sure to keep it locked so acc
ess to the pesticides can be
controlled.

YOUR
This is the time of the year
when many Brantley Countians
are asking questions about buy
ing beef in quantity for the fre
ezer. A lot of the vegetable
supply has been used and there
is more room in the freezer
the time to buy, so here are
some suggestions which should
help you in your selection of
meat.
Many firms advertise “sp
ecials” in newspapers and the
food industry promotes the sale
of freezers and meats tobefro
zen. Study these ads very care
fully. Beefpriced very low may
mean the quality also is very
low. And you may find the pre
trimm ing is very slight.
It is very important to know
the yield grade. Yield “ 1 ”
means you’ll get much more
beef than with yield ” 5 ”.
A reliable source of infor
mation on beef quality is the
USDA grading system. Note
the grade, as it will be an in
dication of quality that relates
to juiceness, tenderness and
flavor. These top grades in
order of quality are: USDA
Prime, Choice, Good, Stand,
ard, Commercial and utility.
The highest grade Prime is
primarily sold to hotels and
restaurants and not to the gen
eral public. USDA Choice and

Good are the most common
grades found at retail markets.
Leanwestern- fed beef, deli,
cous, top quality, fancy, sup.
reme beef and similar terms
are not recognized as quality
indicators. These terms often
to confuse the buyer instead
of guaranteeing a fair price for
the quality she wants and gets.
Some companies offer free
bonuses as come-on bait to lure
customers to buy higher priced
meats. Remember a business
must make a profit if he stays
in operation.
I f you are planning to buy a
hindquarter of beef from a 1,
000 pound of U.S. Coice qual
ity to U.S. Good, you should
know that each hindquarter and
would weigh about 140 pounds.
A 35 pound difference in
weight ( 25 percent ) between
ail cuts obtained from it are
due to fat, bone and cutting
shrinkage. This may varycoi*
siderably, depending on the
finish of the animal and the am
ount of fat and bone removed
in processing the retail cuts.
You can expect about 104
pounds of meat from each hind
quarter of beef weighing 139
pounds.
Some concerns cut the meat
size of roasts and steaks, al
so the number of each you want
in a package. You can also
specify the amount of leaness
you want in your ground beef
and stew meat. The seller sh
ould be able to tell you the app
roximate amount of meat you
should receive from the whole
sale cut you purchase. Also
inquire about cutting and pack
aging costs. Supervise the cu
tting of your beef in order to
know you are getting what you
ordered.

YOUR WILL
A person who dies before he
has made out a valid will is said
to have died “intestate.” And
it means any property he may
have owned is distributed to
his widow and heirs according
to rigid rules of state law.
Economists with the University
of Georgia Extension Service
say a properly prepared will
and testament is a much better
way in just about every case.
