The Remembrances
of a Renegade Son
Dear Dad:
Remember when ?
Now isn’t that an odd state
ment coming from an adult son?
Os course it is. But it would
be fittin’ I suppose, if I were a
ten-year-old. For me though
that age has passed three-plus
times.
But I remember though.
You know dad, memory is a
remarkable thing. Funk and
Wagnail describes it as: “That
which is remembered’’. And
through the ages the words
pleasant and memory have
formed and almost inseparable
association. But such is not
the case with me. That which
I remember could not be called
pleasant memories, but rather
agonizing ones. In fact what I
remember most is my
Stupidity. I guess that’s what
it would be called. I say that
because of how I sneered at
your ideas of exciting advent
ures for me.
Why with alongbow, camera,
duck call, and champion bird
dogs I could have been a Marco
Polo of Brantley County! Oh
yes! I could have had all these
things and more, and used them
well too. For you would have
taught me. It’s disgusting to
think of what I’ve been missing
for twenty-odd vears.
Like the time you suggested
I use a long bow to shoot gar
fish. For what reason Ido
not know but the idea didn’t
appeal to me. But today I
can’t seem to get enough. And
each time I draw the bow I can
hear you say; “Bud, that’s
what you ought to do. Shoot
them gars with a bow and
arrow?*
You went on to explain how
it should be done and I use the
same method today. And I al
ways on the first shot of the
day say to myself, “ here’s
for you dad”. It’s silly I
know, but it gives me courage.
I enjoy this sport to no end
and at the moment plans are
laid for a three day trip to
Toledo Bend Lake, In those
waters the alligator gar reach,
es the hundred pound-plus size.
Can you imagine me going af
ter a fish of that size?
Another idea that I well re
member is a fish-hunt trip.
You didn’t call it by that name
but it means the same thing.
You overheard a friend and I
making plans for a duck hunt
to Lower Bridge. Your sug
gestion was; “Bud, what you
ought to do is take your rod

and reel along and drift down
the river in a boat. That way
you can fish and hunt at the
same time.’’
As you know that idea didn’t
set too well with me either.
Apparently I thought you didn’t
have the foggiest notion of what
excitement is. Oh how stupid
can one get. But I’ve never
forgotten it. The idea fermen
ted all these years and one day
last winter it finally ran clear.
I worked out a schedule for a
two day thirty mile river trip.
When I asked my fishing buddy
if he’d like to come along he
said, why not when doweleave.
“ Soon.’’
We were at a small case
sipping beer when I told him
about the trip. He said to me;
“ Jones, I’ve never known any
one quite like you. Among other
things, where do you get all
these great ideas?’’
I took a long slow pull on my
beer before answering. Really
I’d intended to let him think
it was my own idea. Then I
remembered something I had
read a long time ago; " be at
peace with your soul’’. ( Quo
tations like this seem to mean
■more to me today than ever
before.) I had to confess that
it wasn’t original. “ This and
other ideas like them came
from my Father years ago.
He is truly an “ American
Sportsman”, cont’d next week.

duplicity than straightforward
and simple integrity in another.
The worst part of the forest
fire season will soon be appro
aching with the dry, windy days
of March and April. During
this time of year open fires
are hard to control. Anyone
who has burning to do should
make arrangements to do it
before this time of year. Just
a spark blowing into a sedge
field or the woods is all that
it takes to start a fire that
kills years and years of tim
ber growth, and may even burn
your neighbors house down.
Most forest fires are caused by
nothing less than human care
lessness.
Many times we hear a person
standing bewildered in a cloud
of smoke, saying, “ Well there
wasn’t a bit of wind blowing to
day when I started the fire.”
Little did they know that a fire
creates winds and drafts of its

own just as a fire in a fire
place or a stove.
Many times we hear a house
wife say, “ There was still
frost on the grass when I burn
ed my trash this morning.” She
didn’t realize that the sparks
were still there hours after
the frost had melted and the
grass dry again. Just a puff
of wind was all that it took to
awaken an otherwise harmless
bed of coals.
All residents of Brantley Co
unty are urged to dump trash
into designated areas instead
of burning as in the past.
Anyone needing information
on how to burn and when to
burn, should contact the
Georgia Forestry Commission.
All fires bigger than a washpot
fire supposed to be reported
before starting the fire.
